Getting Real: Focus on What Doesn’t Change

I have been reading Getting Real a lot lately. And, as I put together my “Be Creative and Get Paid” speech, I’m realizing that most of what Jason Fried and 37 Signals say about business can be applyied to the journey of learning a craft and promoting yourself. My advice to students has always been to take more design and type classes, and learn the technical stuff later. Software changes. Learn how to design and animate well and you will be instantly hire-able. Check out this quote from Jason’s Things We’ve Learned speech.

The technology and software business seems to obsess with what is in flux and changing. Always new stuff. New languages and frameworks. Focus on what doesn’t change and think about the things that matter today and will matter 10 years from now.

Maybe one day, Ill have enough products and training to sell to support GSG, but for now, it’s just my photoshop training that makes me any money. My first goal isn’t money, It’s to build a community.
