Welcome to an all new five second projects. This week’s theme is “Old Video Games.” Atari, NES, SEGA, Arcade. It doesn’t matter really. Just help us remember the good old days when Mario ruled the world and first person shooters weren’t around. Create a short project based on the theme and post it in the comments to be entered into the contest.
Why Should You Enter? Check out the video…
How Do I Enter?
- 1. Create a five second animation based on the theme.
- 2. Upload your video to Vimeo. Don’t forget to add a link back to this blog post.
- 3. Post a link to this posts comment thread and I will add it to the Channel.
- 4. Deadline is July 13th
What Are Five Second Projects?
We all want to make cool shit for our reel right? Sometimes you just need a theme to get you started… Some rules to fight against. Use the theme “Old Video Games” to make a five second motion piece and link it in the comments of this blog post. “Shout Box” submissions will not be found and will not be added to the channel. Please be sure to post a link in this post’s comments to ensure me seeing it.
It’s really great to see so much participation. Tell a friend about the five second projects and get them involved too. Don’t forget to push yourself to try something new every week. What about a new piece of software or technique you have wanted to try? Take control of your creative output and Make Cool Shit!
Check out the entries here or visit the Vimeo Channel…

I can;t wait to see the results. I’ve always loved the old school video games – the original Star Wars Arcade Game being my favorite. I created this as a possible tutorial for Red Giant TV, but haven’t had a chance to get it done yet:
http://cache.redgiantsoftware.com/_assets/uploads/file/products-examples/Video_Game.mov
Also, Dan Opsol, one of my students from a few years ago, made this awesome Nintendo-style video game animation as his final project:

Anyway, neither is 5 seconds long, but hopefully they can help inspire.
Great stuff. Love the ending of Billy Bombo.
That was great. Thanks for the inspiration Aharon!
man I am so stoked for this!
Aharon Rabinowitz!!!
You are the man, man!!!!
Spent so many days/weeks/years watching your podcasts.
Its nostalgic now, the upright base followed by the cow’s moo.
This is gonna be great challenge for sure.

great idea, i’m on.
it is funny that this theme is on, cause’ i’m just playing those good old games through internet – http://www.nintendo8.com
favorites are Contra and Super Mario 1.
I have a question – could i make one AE advert of this site – http://www.nintento8.com? Is it kinda forbidden to make somekinda advertisement to a site in this “Five sec projects”.
This site isn’t mine or something. I just like that place
Doing a promo for a site is a great idea. Keep it short and awesome! Sounds fun.
By coincidence, Kotaku posted some stop motion lego animations of arcade classics!

Nick,
I love the 5-second ideas… what a great way to remind yourself that animating is supposed to be FUN even when it sometimes feels like a normal, 9-5 job. Here’s my first ever entry. I went with a “3D Killed the 2D Star” theme.

Hey, loving your tutorials and videos. Your laid back approach is really great.
Heres my first ever video I have actually made propally. It’s quite bad but whatever, it’s my first real try at anything in cinema 4d and after effects.

Funny trying to fit a beginning, middle and end into 5 seconds but I’m getting there. Its my first attempt at pixel art, and animating it, but was a wicked little project. Noice. Can’t wait for the next one.

“Nostalgia Complete” a nod to Tetris, complete with the Gotham font.
Long time viewer, first time participator. Cool topic, so I decided to attempt it.
Here’s my entry—Uh? Just blow on it?
http://www.vimeo.com/5517774
I wish I had had more time to work on it but I’ve got none left this week and I was out of town last week! It originally started out with 3D cube pixels in AE but that would have taken forever. I should have just taken it in to Cinema. Oh well. I did consider just using a ton of offset layers. Others got good results with it, but I decided against it.
Anyway, good work everyone!
By the way, I really wish I had thought of Tetris first, I only played it solidly for hours every day of my childhood. Oh well.
Here’s my entry…had a blast making this one
Let me know what you think.

Theres my entry for the old video game 5 second project.
Not that great i know but im still fairly new to AE.
I figured the best way for me to get better is to try things like this.
Thanks
Hi there!
Here is something I made for this project called: Pixel Spaceship
http://www.vimeo.com/5524510
Hope you’ll like it!
It’s really about experimentig new techniques, in this case Maya’s nParticles – the surface and the explosion was generated by these animation tools – but also considering concept I found it interesting to transfer a 2D pixel space into 3D…
I also uploaded it here – just to make sure.

Hey Nick,
This is my fist entry to your 5 seconds projects.
I’m about to begin my 2nd year in animation school, there were some things that we didn’t see in class and that I wanted to try this summer.
This is one of them: Inverse Kinematics in After Effects.

I would like get some comments or critics on the video.
Here is my cool shit:
It was made on Flint.
