UPDATE: If you are looking for a tutorial for the dynamics in the new Mograph 2 Module, try this tutorial instead.

Some of you were asking about a quick tutorial on how I set up last week’s Dynamics Test. I made this tutorial to show you the basic set up of how to get objects in your scene to bounce off each other. As you know, I have been a bit obsessed with dynamics in C4D all weekend. I hope to get more tutorials about dynamics soon. Enjoy!

Very cool Nick. I would like to see some tutorials on animating in C4D (F-curve, etc.), as opposed to just dynamics. My .02.

One of the bests Dynamics software out there is RealFlow4.
It not only works with fluids great, it also has rigid body dynamics. But as you said, it coasts money.

great here is my first test after seeing yours
    http://vimeo.com/5476486

waiting for seeing your tut’s and see if I was on the right way ; )

    Bye,
    m-_g

    thegorilla

Love it. How did you make those textures?

    m-_g

Thanks ! So for the balls it is the same texture with different colors gradients :

    - Color : gradient (2D-V) from dark blue to green-blue and pink to orange for the others
    - *Reflexion : 2% intensity, texture : fresnel
    - *Specular : plastic, 77%, 81%, -36%, 0%
    - *Displacemenet : 7% intesity & 11m high, texture : noise by default
(*it is to figure a kind of glossy crystal sugar outskin – not a perfect ball)

For the floor it’s a Danel texture but I changed the Diffusion color into a deep&dark purple

For rendering I built a studio whith your tricks for lightening,

Expect it’s quite clear I can make some screen capture or post you my source file if you want.

    have a nice day,

    m-_g

    thegorilla

    Thanks mg!

    Thats a great looking material!

  6. pj on July 7, 2009 said...

small tip regarding the gradient. To get this blocky kind of the gradient its better to click small triangle next to the gradient stripe and switch interpolation from cubic knots to none, you get crisp edge between colours. great blog! cheers

    thegorilla

    Great tip. Thanks pj!

Nick, for some reason the new vid is unviewable to me. It loads, but no sound and it skips. Maybe its on my end, but your other vids still work fine.

    Thanks

  8. Rangeas on July 7, 2009 said...

yeah~ I can’t hear the sound either. Video loads normal, however, the audio is skips.

Thanks Nick, it seems C4D Dynamics are really not that easy to handle. One thing I remember is the EPS value, it calculates the correct distance between objects so that they dont intersect.

Great tutorial as always! Just one question, why don’t you enable HD embedding?

hey what is happening here !
did i said some thing wrong ?
i see some comments here published after me comment!! why??

    thegorilla

Sorry Zeeny, Your comment ended up in spam because of all the links. I have been looking at SilverBullet. Do you like it? How much easier is it to use? Also, does it handle more items? I really want to try something with a TON of marbles.

    zeeny

    hello again :)

its ok nick , thanks for your replay,

absolutely i like it from my heart , it’s very easy to use .. the plugin can handle with hundred and hundred and TON of objects without any problems :)

after installing plugin you will found only THREE options in silverbullet4D menu :

    1- MakeDynamic
    2- MakeStatic
    3- MakrKinmatic

    that’s it ..!!

i made a quick tutorial special for u about that options to know how the plugin works

Hey nick, gret tutorial. I have a little question (maybe a topic for some gsg cast someday) regarding file structure. I spend a lot of times, even in the most organized projects, trying to find out where are my files. The specific question is, in both personal and professional work (dk pipeline), assuming worst-case scenario (live action footage, references, 3d image sequences, alpha and z-depth passes, psd’s, ai’s, textures, projects files, and a long etc.), how do you organize you folders in order to keep the productivity flowing? Thanks for everithing man

Now is would be really great to see if you can mix Dynamics with the emitter and get your balloons to bounce off one another.

I dont have any sound. I get the Into Viemo sound but nothing during the tutorial. All of your other ones I have sound, Am I the only one having this problem

Hey, Nick… I’ve been messing around with dynamics for about a week now and have def. found it to be unwieldy… makes me feel like I’m back in math class… I was screwing around with wind and gravity today to try to get a certain effect… A bunch of spheres flying and bouncing around inside a glass cylinder.

Also wondering if dynamics would work with a particle emitter. Any ideas? Gonna try it but am rendering the cylinder thing right now on my old-ass dual-core mac pro. Will post a vimeo link when it’s done.

    a bit of a mess.

    thegorilla

Crazy looking. Yeah, c4d dynamics can be a pain in the ass. I am looking into SilverBullet right now. I’ll let you know what i find.

  23. John Fischer on July 10, 2009 said...

    Here’s my version:

    http://vimeo.com/5544006

Tried bouncing off multiple objects and adding a glass object to catch the balls at the bottom. Design needs work, and the stickiness/pausing thing is driving me nuts. I’ll keep working on more versions, but this is definitely a cool technique.

    Todd Day

Very cool, John! I never had the sticking issue… will look at my file again and let you know.

Another experiment… this time with thinking particles and collision… still looking for the holy grail when it comes to C4D Dynamics… Still playing with it. Not much luck but have learned more…

    Hy
    It’s a little complicated ..?? isn’t ??
Why you don’t use the Hair module it’s very easy !!!

    John Fischer

I don’t know enough about the hair module, but I’m curious how you would do this with it?

And is it faster, or does it slow down as dynamics does with many objects?

    Hello, Nick!
    Thanks for this great tutorial!

UPDATE: just got off the phone with Maxon and they admint that the DYNAMC module is old as hell itself. So, they have offered to swap dynamics for hair. Hey, as long as I have mass, gravity, and detection I should be good to go. Will keep you updated Nick… I should have the info from Maxon soon. DON’T MAKE ME GO BACK TO MAYA HELL! Hey, there is a reason why the MAYAns aren’t around anymore :)

  30. Navarro Parker on July 21, 2009 said...

The C4D Dynamics module I don’t think ever moved past v1.0. It’s SO out of date. SilverBullet is a good replacement plug-in. All signs point to r11.5 being announced at SIGGRAPH in a couple weeks. Here’s hoping for a new Dynamics upgrade!

Nice example! Hey do you or anyone else have any idea how to bounce soft bodies off of each other. Like in this awesome syfy spot http://www.vimeo.com/5510525? I’ve tried both clothilde and soft springs. The balls bounce off the ground just fine, but they do not bounce off each other. I think it would make a pretty dope tut.

    thegorilla

Nice Spots!! I will play around and see if I can get that look. I’ll be sure to share when I do.

    lucas

Sweet! Yeah i’ve been obsessed with them since they released. I think they were handled by proudcreative …for anyone who cares. I’ll let you know if I get a similar look, as well.

    Thanks Nick

Hi nick, Collision Eps under Solver object > Details has to do with the distance of the collision, taking out the “hovering effect”. The default is 20 i think, try to change it to 1. and it will work just fine. Thanks for the video.

So how would you animated the disk so that it tilts back and forth while the balls are falling on it. Was trying to figure this out after watching your tut. Not sure what im doing wrong any help would be great. Thanks!

    The Gorilla

You can just use traditional animation techniques to move the disk. Maybe try a Vibrate Tag?

Although I DO appreciate the effort of making this tut, it would be helpful if you kinda rehearse it before putting it up for the whole world. Makes it a little frustrating to watch when you trying to figure out live how to do things. I don’t mean it in a negative way, since generally your other tuts are pretty good.
