How Good is the New iPhone 3GS Camera – Ummm, It’s Really Great! 24 Comments

I wanted to post some shots taken with the new iPhone 3GS. I have been really impressed with the quality from the new camera and lens. It’s a wider angle lens so that helps take better landscape. The macro focus is super useful (especially for taking photos of beer labels.) The touch to focus feature is brilliant.

What really blew me away though is the fact that the touch point on your photo also regulates exposure and color temperature. Check out the image below to see the difference. I took a photo of a back lit subject with this feature. This is huge! With the old iPhone cameras, backlit photos were impossible. Now, just touch on the person’s face and take your shot. Check out some of the shots below all taken with the new camera. I even have a full-rez version that you can download below too.

Lastly, I wanted to show you a little behind the scenes with the new version of my iPhone app, ShakeItPhoto. We have uploaded version 1.1 that is fully compatible with the new camera on the 3GS to Apple and are waiting for them to approve it. Until then, I wanted to share the results with the new version that features the full cropping. The new wide angle lens really helps get more in the shot when taking ShakeItPhotos. Plus, the better quality lens and images really show themselves when processed through the App. Enjoy.

  1. totally agree with you.. Just got mine on Saturday and have been taking photos non-stop..

Have you used any of the flickr or other account uploaders? I’ve noticed some of them force the phone to down-res the image from raw size to 1280×1024 as the highest available.. i’m using the Flickit app for it right now.. and it does that. Maybe there’s one out there that doesn’t down-size?

    Great shots btw..

you might be interested in seeing this…It’s an add-on lens system for the iphone. kinda over-doing it.. but cool nonetheless.

  3. Thanks for cranking out an update for ShakeItPhoto… I use it every single day! In fact I have the whole studio using it now.

Is it possible that someday in the future you might update ShakeItPhoto to allow me to treat none “Shaken” photos in my iPhone library? I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gone through my library of images and thought “DANG, If I could only ShakeItPhoto’ify this image!”

Again thanks for this wicked ass app!

The new shots are really great. I was just looking at some with my 8gig 1.0 (not looking to upgrade), I see i’m going to have to do some noise reduction. How’s the video camera? Very cool stuff on the shakeitphoto app. I also agree with the above stated hardware reviews (wacom tablet… cough, cough)

I have to agree with Dylan. I’ve been following your blog for a little while, and have found myself more productive, and inspired to go out and create “cool shit everyday” :)

I’m also really digging the ShakeItPhoto app, and look forward to the update being approved.

I’ve been using posterous to do a daily photoblog with ShakeItPhoto @ http://dema.posterous.com.

I also wanted to mention something regarding the iPhone app. I’ve been using this ther app called NightCamera to take stable shots in darker settings.

I guess their trick is to ehstu accelerometer to judge when the phone is still, and then hit the shutter.

I’m wondering if this is a feature you’re considering in the future for ShakeItPhoto.

I’d love to use SiP for all my photo-taking on the iphone.

    Cheers,

  9. Can’t wait for the update. I bought the 3GS two weeks ago just before leaving on a 12 day road trip up the west coast. My canon P&S never left my bag. Even with the odd cropping of ShakeItPhoto v1, it’s all i used. Once you get the hang of it, composing the shots properly isn’t too bad… and you sometimes get unexpected surprises. I haven’t uploaded all of them, but you can check ‘em out some shots on my flickr account here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/the_fuzz

Thanks again for the awesome app and blog, Nick!

wow. Impressive. Yet another reason to get one! I just can’t bring myself to buying the data plan! It’s just such a great excuse NOT to reply to emails from certain people right away! :)
