Five Second Project “Modern Monkey” and “Goodnight”

New To FiveSecondProjects… Photos!
Finally, I added a photo section of the Five Second Project for all you photographers. I am using Flickr group to aggregate all of the submissions to the project. Head on over to the Flickr Group and submit your entry. Bare with us as we figure out more of the specifics of how the photography work will be displayed. Yeah, I know that FiveSeconds doesn’t make sense for photography, but the idea is the same. Create an image based on the theme. This will get better and better, I swear. Keep in mind that only new photos taken especially for the project should be included in the group. DO NOT add old work. This should be an excuse to get out and shoot NEW photos based on the theme.

Why Should You Enter? Check out the video…

How Do I Enter my Video?

  • 1. Create a five second animation based on the theme.
  • 2. Upload your video to Vimeo. Don’t forget to add a link back to this blog post.
  • 3. Post a link to this posts comment thread and I will add it to the Channel.
  • 4. Deadline is September 7th

What Are Five Second Projects?
We all want to make cool shit for our reel right? Sometimes you just need a theme to get you started… Some rules to fight against. Use the theme “Modern Monkey” to make a five second motion piece and link it in the comments of this blog post. “Shout Box” submissions will not be found and will not be added to the channel. Please be sure to post a link in this post’s comments to ensure me seeing it.

Photographers, use the theme, “Goodnight” to go shoot a photo. Link it in the Flickr group.

It’s really great to see so much participation. Tell a friend about the five second projects and get them involved too. Don’t forget to push yourself to try something new every week. What about a new piece of software or technique you have wanted to try? One more thing, try to tell your story without just putting “Modern Monkey” on the screen in text. Use the theme to create a concept. Take control of your creative output and Make Cool Shit!

great idea for a theme. im gonna really need to think on this… i wonder how many people will animate a monkey in a suit lol

  2. Does this idea have anything to do with “How to Draw Your Name in Photoshop?” Because that would be amazing.

  3. takehiko says:

photo themes have to be shot by a camera or can be a draw made all with photoshop?

  4. cookiedough says:

gorilla man, what bout all the promised tutorials teaching the techniques used in the conan obrien’s opening?

    • Rounin says:

Tuesdays is usually when he does his Tuts. Give him a little break man. It looks to be a one man show. He’s got a full time design job, a website(s)( which in itself is a lot of work for updating content ),DVD thingy, life, so forth. We don’t want the Gorilla to be burnt out. Just be patient. By the way your name is making me hungry:)

    • Thomas says:

on major rule in free tutorials: no begging!

go try figure out for yourself how the opening could be achieved and see how far or close you’ve been after watching the oncoming tutorial.

Should be some good ones this time, oh nick ignore the question in the email about changing materials over time in cinema. Didn’t have it near me, just opened it up and looked at the texture tag with a keyframe-able property. Doh.

  6. hossiam says:

  16. Tyrelle says:

@ Chris Hamilton, your submission is real good but it seems a little racial doesn’t it? I mean considering that we black people have been called monkeys and also invented hip hop…it appears your subconscious came through in your animation.

    • thegorilla says:

I don’t see your point Tyrelle. I don’t see a hint of negativity. Tread lightly here. Be careful and explicit when accusing people.

      • Tyrelle says:

I’m black so my perception is different from yours. I have been called a monkey on the internet by racist whites and I have also been accused of being a good hip hop star just because I’m black. These are stereotypes associated with us and as you can see that I wasn’t disrespectful I was just pointing out to Chris that he might want to be more cognizant of what he does in the future because some people can find offense in the smallest things. I saw an animation once where a load of poo fell on a white guy. Once the poo landed on him he turned black.

        • Tyrelle says:

I guess the better question is why did Chris feel that a modern monkey equaled hip hop. As opposed to a more traditional monkey that does jazz? Like I said his animation is good but having been called a monkey a thousand times online and also being accuse of being a rapper it did make me pause.

        • Jordan Taylor says:

i think Tyrelle u looking into to this wayy too deep, I understand being critical of somethings and deconstructing the world around us, but honestly maybe the kid (Chris Hamilton) is just a big Hip Hop fan and that’s what he came up with, the fact that black ppl started hip hop and have been referred to a “monkeys” doesn’t mean that his video subconsciously calls black people monkeys. If u think about it constantly and look for those kind of things constantly you will find whether there really there or not.

Plus if some body was watchin that and got that out of it, I’d say there prolly a closed minded person and theyd find something racially negative regardless.

        • Jordan Taylor says:

and Im black also and have been called many things so I can relate

        • Jordan Taylor says:

not that your skin color should matter
