Five Second Project – “Upside Down”

August 3, 2009

Welcome to an all new five second projects. This week’s theme is “UpsideDown.”Create a short project based on the theme and post it in the comments to be entered into the contest.

New To FiveSecondProjects… Photos!
Finally, I added a photo section of the Five Second Project for all you photographers. I am using Flickr group to aggregate all of the submissions to the project. Head on over to the Flickr Group and submit your entry. Bare with us as we figure out more of the specifics of how the photography work will be displayed. Yeah, I know that FiveSeconds doesn’t make sense for photography, but the idea is the same. Create an image based on the theme. This will get better and better, I swear. Keep in mind that only new photos taken especially for the project should be included in the group. DO NOT add old work. This should be an excuse to get out and shoot NEW photos based on the theme.

Why Should You Enter? Check out the video…

How Do I Enter my Video?

  • 1. Create a five second animation based on the theme.
  • 2. Upload your video to Vimeo. Don’t forget to add a link back to this blog post.
  • 3. Post a link to this posts comment thread and I will add it to the Channel.
  • 4. Deadline is August 17th

How Do I Enter my Photo?

What Are Five Second Projects?
We all want to make cool shit for our reel right? Sometimes you just need a theme to get you started… Some rules to fight against. Use the theme “Upside Down” to make a five second motion piece and link it in the comments of this blog post. “Shout Box” submissions will not be found and will not be added to the channel. Please be sure to post a link in this post’s comments to ensure me seeing it.

It’s really great to see so much participation. Tell a friend about the five second projects and get them involved too. Don’t forget to push yourself to try something new every week. What about a new piece of software or technique you have wanted to try? One more thing, try to tell your story without just putting “Updside Down” on the screen in text. Use the theme to create a concept. Take control of your creative output and Make Cool Shit!

So as it stands now upside down is the theme for both photo & animation projects? If so, for this week it seems to work for both, but I would like to suggest that they have different themes if it doesn’t complicate stuff to much.

    thegorilla

Totally, in the future, expect to have the themes be different. I didn’t want to confuse things for the first one though.

    Ryan Hamilton

cool cool. looking forward to seeing results and submitting to both.

    Bran

How many adds for the photo project are allowed?. :)

and could it be diptych etc :)

    thegorilla

Only one photo can be added to the theme. Diptychs are fine as long as it’s one file.

    Bran

so i’ll take out my Lubitel166 and finish the expired ORWO from ‘87 :)

I love the idea of including the photos to contest, thank Nick.
May I suggest allowing people to upload more than just 1 picture to theme? I believe that people are able to produce more than just one picture in two weeks. I had at least 3 ideas for this theme.
    Thank again.

so i had this video recorded and I was gonna do the voice over this weekend at my buddy’s studio… but some guy over at AETuts beat me to the punch and release almost the same tutorial… anyway here it is without voice over… the explaination is below it…

I had a shoutout to GSG in the tutorial as you can see…

    thegorilla

Dude, Nice. The funny thing is, is that I had a stencil tutorial ready too. He beat us both to the punch. Good technique though.

A question about the photo project, how much photoshop is allowed? I mean besides fixing colors, levels and alike…

    thegorilla

There are no specific rules right now for the photo Projects. I’m sure that there will be some rules that come out of the first project. Ideally, there will be a “Photo” upload and a “Design” upload. Maybe though it is all in one? what do you think?

    Xavier

I would love the photo project to be more about the photo than photoshop skills, so anything more than adjusting colors, levels, brightness and simple stuff like that to be banned, like putting a car on a boat in the middle of a lake, unless it was really there. So if there´s a design project too anything like that could fit in there.
I reckon 2 categories would be best, one for photos and one for design, oh and the one for motion, so 3.

    Hope that makes sense :)

    thegorilla

Totally! That’s how I see it too. I’m sure there will be more specific rules coming soon. Especially when FiveSecondProjects.com goes up.

Here ya go! BTW, just wanted to mention that I think this is a great idea (Five Second Animations). I’ve been a Flash guy for so long and have always wanted to dable with AE. You’ve given me hope Nick!

    Oh, here’s my video
    http://vimeo.com/6032835

    Josh Chernoff

I feel that AE is very close to flash, they both use keyframes for tweening (“interpolation”) and AE uses shorthand javascript for scripting witch is just about the same as AS3.

    thegorilla

A lot of your Flash animation skills will pass though to AE. So far, it looks like your doing a great job! Keep rocking!

Hey Nick maybe you set some community standards and edict. People are getting way to offended by my critique. I have had one guy just delete my comments, and another says he’s cool but just to freak out on later as I posted my thoughts.

I was never out of line, I was blunt but not rude. I was under the impression that this community was mature enough for this. Maybe you should set some ground rules as to what is ok and what is not.

My idea is that if you can’t take it, just say so. That way when others come to your video and want to spend their free time giving you good input wont if you get offend to easy. That’s only far, because I would like people to feel free enough to say whats on there mind when viewing my work be it good or bad.

And if people are only ok with say “good job” Then I will go find something better to do.

    thegorilla

Hi Josh, First of all, thanks for your critique. We need more like you for sure. I’m struggling to find a way to make sure critique is asked for by the posters. Maybe there is an OPT IN for critique? Maybe an opt out. I will definitely think about a way to standardize this. Overall, I think everyone should be prepared for critique. It only makes you better. Having the critique public is harder to deal with though. Hmmm. Any thoughts on this?

    Josh Chernoff

I think so long as people make it clear about their comfort level things will be fine, but that’s to say be will be honest about their comfort level.

The problem is this is an individual’s issue and there is not much we can do about if that individual will react negatively to critique.

But I think so long as we set the standers to expect that there will be critiques and you should be clear on your own about your own comfort level there “should” be no problems.

    Josh Chernoff

crap, sorry about all the type-o’s

    William Wallace

    Rock on man

    Ryan Hamilton

I think that by participating in 5 sec. projects you agree to accept critique good or bad. Bad critique only strengthens ones work, so if people here can’t handle it then they are going to progress very slowly. Plus Art Directors and others of the such in the industry are not afraid to be blunt with peoples work. If people can’t take critism here what will they do when they get work, run to the hall way and cry? haha.
I also think just saying “Cool Piece” and “This is Dope” is pointless. If you can’t explain why a piece is good and works well then you are not helping with the progression of this blog.
