What Are Five Second Projects?
We all want to make cool shit for our reel right? Sometimes you just need a theme to get you started… Some rules to fight against. Use the theme “Fast Food” to make a five second motion piece and link it in the comments of this blog post. Please be sure to post a link in this post’s comments to ensure me seeing it.

Photographers, use the theme, “Fast Food” to go shoot a photo. Link it in the Flickr group.

Why Should You Enter? Check out the video…

How Do I Enter my Video?

  • 1. Create a five second animation based on the theme.
  • 2. Upload your video to Vimeo. Don’t forget to add a link back to this blog post.
  • 3. Post a link to this posts comment thread and I will add it to the Channel.
  • 4. Deadline is October 19th

How Do I Enter my Photo?

  • 1. Take a photo based on the theme. Photos only please. Designs and illustrations are not allowed.
  • 2. Upload your photo to flickr and add it to the group. Don’t forget to add a link back to this blog post.
  • 4. Deadline is October 19th

It’s really great to see so much participation. Tell a friend about the five second projects and get them involved too. Don’t forget to push yourself to try something new every week. What about a new piece of software or technique you have wanted to try? One more thing, try to tell your story by using text “Fast Food” on the screen in text. Use the theme to create a concept. Take control of your creative output and Make Cool Shit!

Nice modeling Spencer! Cut it down a bit though and repost so I can add it to the channel. It’s a bit long for a five second project. Thanks!!!

Um, peeps, it’s 5 SECOND projects. How come people have so much trouble keeping them to just 5 seconds. I may be incorrect but I thought Nick’s entire purpose of these being 5 second projects is to have an end result that is awesome.

I know he talks about how long it takes just to get 5 great seconds of animation, which is why everyone should be editing their content to a strict SOLID 5 seconds only, tired of seeing top finalist coming in with projects over the 5 second mark.

(Spencerf – your project is 13 seconds?)

    The Gorilla

Yeah, I agree about this one. 7 or 8 is OK, but I don’t think I can accept videos longer than ten seconds anymore. I may have to finally make a rules section eh?

    Shawn B

I specifically think I remember you saying, to have 5 great seconds of animation, is to have something that is resolved within that timeframe and is then possible in throwing into a reel as supplementary eye candy if need be or something along those lines… which I agree is totally the purpose, as well as tuning your editing skills to make only what’s necessary happen in a shorter given timeframe, hence the CHALLENGE! I am getting involved on this project.

  4. Aleksey on October 6, 2009 said...

    sounds cool!

I think the point is it’s meant o be short. I reckon if you go over to 7 secs its fine, but yeah Spencerf, you really have no reason to go over 5 secs there..

i already know some people are going to make food move fast in the composition, thinking its clever… that would make me laugh :)

    Anders Hattne

that’s just what I’m going to do. I’ve spent 2 hours trying to come up with a clever idea, which felt more than enough. So I’ll do something simple and try hard to make it look good.
After all I do this to learn technique.. maybe I’m wrong. Is this all about lateral thinking?! Omg The doubts! Nooooooooo!

Nick, once i saw website for 5 second project, now i can’t find it. Are you decided to not start this page?

    The Gorilla

We are debating on if we are going to keep FiveSecondProjects on GSG or move it to it’s own site. Stay tuned.

    Nick

    bjkid

    keep it here

    Pedro

I recommend you just make another tab: like the blog, daily photo, about…just add five second project

    why people don’t read???
when somebody says 5 seconds are 5 seconds… and when the theame is fast food… it doesn’t mean cities!! LOL

    The Gorilla

Yeah, this has been happening more and more. I want to encourage people to make something (anything) for the project, but I may have to start enforcing some rules. Maybe an official announcement will help?

    Matt Frodsham

I’m gonna guess the city one is just a re-used project as it has type specific to something else that I wouldn’t expect came as a result of thinking of fast food

  10. PatrikTG on October 6, 2009 said...

Maybe 5 seconds just isn’t enough time. Maybe it should be 10 seconds or less. You can’t really build up to something and have a “punchline” in just 5 seconds.

    Bran

    Actually – You Can…
but almost in 98% of the time you need a second opinion to see it :)
If you do it by yourself and judge it – you love all of it. So you won’t see the garbage in there. /opposite to this logic there’s 24h movie, 8h movie and etc…/

These Competitions are fun and will try to do stuff like this more often

    cheers

    Shawn Burns

This is what I’m talkin about! Excellent 5 second project, look at all that happened in this one (i know it’s 6 seconds, but it could happen in 5!) This is intriguing and resolving itself all in 5 seconds! So Well Done!

    Kingkongkaiser

    merci monsieur

but i was really having a hard time, trying to fit everything in such a short timeline, personally i would prefer a 8 or 10 second compettition, sice this would make possible to create some sort of narration

    The Gorilla

Yeah, five seconds is short, but it’s concept is to fill out your demo reel and allow you to try out new things. For longer pieces, you could try to submit to a film festival.

    Kingkongkaiser

maybe there is something between 5 sec. clip and full feature or short film but anyways its fun and a good practice

Five seconds. That’s the name of the contest and should be the instantaneous cut-off for entries. Why on earth is there any debate about this, or talk of ‘no more than ten seconds’?

To allow anyone to ’sneak in’ even an extra second is absurd. Whatever the content of the piece — from brilliant to mundane — for the creative to take liberty in the length of the timeline is not only presumptive, it’s downright rude. (Not to mention unfair to those of us who’ve strived to maintain the integrity of the contest, as set out in the ground rules.)

That’s my two cents, and I’m stickin’ to it.

I love the idea of this being just FIVE seconds… it makes me feel like this is a contest i can take part in!

Does a stop motion fit in? becouse i only see graphin animation…
however, i loved enough the idea i came up with, to star it right now.. i hope it fits! and finish it soon to share it.

Total congratulations for your work here in the blog Nick! i totally love it…. !!

    The Gorilla

Stop motion is totally accepted. The tentative rules list is, Animated, Five Seconds, and has something to do with the theme. That’s all it takes to enter. I can’t wait to see it.

    perezvila™

now i’m re reading my own post… god will punish me hard for all the misspelled words (and i dont know how to write misspelled… fuck!!)

i’m having total fun in my kitchen right now!! best regards!
