UPDATE: Spooky Scary is now closed. Stay tuned to see the winners. Thanks to everyone for entering.

Yep, it’s time again for my favorite holiday, Halloween! So, in honor of all things dark, fun and mysterious, this week’s theme will be “Spooky Scary”. Enter your animation now. New to the Five Second Projects? See the instructions below to get started.
Sponsored by Mocha from Imagineer Systems

Thanks to our new sponsor, Imagineer Systems. They have offered up a great prize package featuring mocha and mocha shape. Mocha is a really cool planar tracker that allows you to track object in your scene and export the results into your compositing tool. Check out their products here.
The Prizes
The winner of the project will receirve a full version of mocha and the raffle prize, randomly chosen from all of the entries, will win a copy of mocha for After Effects and mocha Shape for After Effects. Awesome right? Thanks again to the sponsors!
What Are Five Second Projects?
We all want to make cool shit for our reel right? Sometimes you just need a theme to get you started… Some rules to fight against. Use the theme “Spooky Scary” to make a five second motion piece and link it in the comments of this blog post. Please be sure to post a link in this post’s comments to ensure me seeing it.
Why Should You Enter? Check out the video…
How Do I Enter my Video?
- 1. Create a five second animation based on the theme.
- 2. Upload your video to Vimeo. Don’t forget to add a link back to this blog post.
- 3. Post a link to this posts comment thread and I will add it to the Channel.
- 4. Deadline is November 2nd
What Happened to Photos?
Sorry everyone, but I decided to stop doing the photo theme along with the Motion Design theme. There just weren’t enough entries. Plus, it doesn’t make sense with some of the prizes offered from the sponsors. I will try to get a different thing going for photographers, but for now, check out Photo Friday if you need a weekly theme… Thanks to everyone who actually posted a photo in the Flickr Theme though. Check them out here.
It’s really great to see so much participation. Tell a friend about the five second projects and get them involved too. Don’t forget to push yourself to try something new every week. What about a new piece of software or technique you have wanted to try? One more thing, try to tell your story without using the text “Spooky Scary” on the screen in text. Use the theme to create a concept instead. Take control of your creative output and Make Cool Shit!
Check out the entries here or visit the Vimeo Channel.

Great theme!
I hope I can find the time to create some spooky stuff!
That’s a great theme
. Lot of possibilities on this one. I’m in France this week(not at home), when is the deadline? I’d love to participate on this one, absolutely great prize as well
.
ok,… got no time to really do some funky stuff for this, but my will to enter is stronger
might not be my best work (not at all
) but as i´m into timelapse lately, i just enter with some seconds of my shots i did today … kinda fits i guess

Great theme….I’ll try to get something in on this one…
Ooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhh…..
boooya… lets do this!
Hey Nick… Great theme! Too bad you decided to drop the Photographers, I enjoyed my five second projects for photography. But I can understand that it wasn’t going to work for you with so few entries. Still hoping you think of something else to do for the photographers
For now, I guess I’ll have to try to make something in After Effects! Still having trouble mastering that, but hey, if one doesn’t try…. right?
I LOLed so hard at the title of this 5 second project. 30 rock all the way.
Hey Nick,
I just noticed that you put my fast food 5 sec entry in the wrong channel. It’s in the circle and spheres channel at the moment. Any chance you could swap it over?
Cheers
Awesome work on the site man.
Adam.

Have to make time for this one, not had chance the last 2. One thing nick…
“One more thing, try to tell your story by using text “Spooky Scary” on the screen in text”
I think you need a ‘not’ in there somewhere or you might get all typography animations again!
The Gorilla on October 20th, 2009 said...
Thanks, Matt. Just fixed it. I definitely meant DONT use the text “Spooky Scary”.
Thanks!
I’m working on a *new* project for this one, but i just had to throw this one in the mix… It’s a short i did last year for shits n giggles, that happened to be exactly 5 seconds and just seemed way to perfect for this theme!

This was done with the philosophy in mind of trying something new, something you’ve never done before. Scary!:)

@ Serge – Thanks dude! Python is a huge inspiration to me and whilst I obviously try to avoid lifting concepts I just couldn’t help myself once I reminded myself of this animation: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nKTj7KmxxdA
@ Ross – Thanks! Glad you’re curious for more. I’m actually working on a much longer piece using the same style with a not dissimilar theme. Won’t be done for a few months but I’m sinking my heart and soul into it so I hope it won’t dissapoint.
Here is our zombie roto piece!! http://vimeo.com/7408529
Mental Note: Always check the audio before rendering, especially when you are a procrastinator)
Hey Nick, I think your site is set up for East Coast time. It’s down to the wire but audio matters! Thanks for putting these projects out there, They’re much appreciated.
Nice, Three minutes to spare.
