Five Second Project – “Primitives” – CLOSED

Let’s stick to the basics for this one. Sometimes you can get too carried away with complex models and scenes. Let’s see what you can do when you’re limited! Primitives only with this one. If you’re animating in something other than 3D software (which is fine), then use simple shapes only.

What Are Five Second Projects?
We all want to make cool shit for our demo reel right? Sometimes you just need a theme to get you started… Some rules to fight against. Use the theme “Primitives” to make a five second motion piece and enter it into the form below. If your new to five second projects, why not check out the Five Second Projects Archive to see all of the past themes.

Rules

1. Submissions must be Five Seconds Long!
2. Only animation is accepted. Video only submissions will not.
3. The animations has to do with the theme in some way.
4. Original Work only. Don’t cut out 5 seconds of already made work.
5. Link back to GSG on your Vimeo Post

Why Should You Enter?

1. Try new techniques or software
2. Limitations help get the mind working.
3. Make short, awesome pieces for your reel.
4. Get critique from your peers.
5. Promote yourself.

How Do I Enter my Video?

1. Create a five second animation based on the theme.

2. Upload your video to Vimeo. Don’t forget to add a link back to this blog post.

3. Submit your link to the form below and I will add it to the channel

4. Deadline is Sunday, October 10th

Submissions are now closed thanks to all you participated!

    Hi Nick…
this is somnath mandal from india.

Is There any idea on How to create
“Enchanted” style pop up book effect.
    Thaks for your beautiful tuts.

    • Rodge says:

You could just use your 2d artwork and slap it on a Plane.
To do so; create a plane in C4D. Make a new material with your artwork as an image texture (and use an alpha channel for desired transparency). Place your planes in 3d space and animate ‘em in your page turn.

    • somnath mandal says:

      thanks Rodge.

  12. bliuska says:

I think this will be my debut:) have few ideas:) gl to all! see you on podium!

  13. chraetian says:

cant we use nurbs or cloners??

  14. This will be my first. Already finished the scene and rendered out some test renders =] Now texturing and rendering.

  15. JaanBoy says:

I just started learning Cinema 4D about a week ago, so this will be my first 5 Second Project.. I can’t wait!!!

  16. Dennis says:

Can I use things to jazz up the primitives like a hat or other objects for instance? As long as the primitives are the main objects in the 5 sec project?

  17. Jason says:

setting the rules to be limited is a good thing. i urge you to take it further though; like what von trier did with “five obstructions”. limiting the animation to five seconds is already one obstruction. try making more rules and conditions to really force people to get creative.

  21. Max Remming says:

    Hi Nick,

    I sent you a mail…
I ‘ve worked a lot for my first 5SP, the motion stop at 05″ but the sound design at 07″.. Is it fine ? Sorry for that, I’ve tried others things and no way it must be like this !

    Link of my 5SP-Primitives :

Please, don’t tell me I’ve worked for nothing…

    Cheers

    • The Gorilla says:

5 Seconds is in the title, so 5 seconds is the max that we submit to the page. Sometimes it slips a few frames into 6, but not 7.

It’s a really great piece, actually. But, you can cut time on it for sure. There is even some black at the end you can cut. It’s one of only two rules we have. Make an animation based on the theme, and make it 5 seconds.

Sorry to be so strict, but it’s not fair for others that follow the rules.

Let me know if you update it, we will add it.

  27. TriplePlayProd says:

    Here’s my entry for the 5SP: http://vimeo.com/15641371

This is my first time using C4D, and I haven’t explored the wonders of animating with moGraph yet, so I decided to build something out of primitives. Be gentle.

  28. mism says:

Here’s mine. There’s some really nice work been posted by people.

  32. Steven Jenkins says:

  33. Steve says:

I submitted before it was converted, but something went wrong, So here is my submission again, it does not work with the form. http://vimeo.com/15682161 hope it gets included. Worked hard on it.

  34. Coen Brasser says:

Loving your blog for quite a while now, so it was time to join your community with a contribution to the 5s projects.

Do got a question, does anybody know how I can setup the perspective camera without the distortion (so that it looks like a top down view)?

  35. Kefka says:

My first time in 5SP, it was quite fun and it proved me i suck at rendering something fast.
Really got to work on optimizing my render (maybe stop putting AA on best and still image, also maybe don’t put “256″ in the sky sampler value…)

    Mine is here: http://vimeo.com/15686976

  36. Martin says:

    Cheers for the Primitives Nick.

  39. Daniel Amedoda says:

I added my video before the deadline. but it still has not been added to the group. Also does anybody else have problems with vimeo missing out the first few frames?

No show at the vimeo channel, added mine half a day ago: http://www.vimeo.com/15686081

  42. Steve says:

Hi Nick, I think a tutorial about how tweak the render settings to post on Vimeo would benefit a lot of us. My stuff doesn’t look half as good as it does before uploading. Since a lot of people are joining the 5sec projects, you would have a grateful audience.

  43. Max says:

    Check out my entry:

    Dear Gorilla,

my submission doesn’t appear in the vimeo channel, although I’ve delivered it in time and signed up with the entry form in this post. I’ve also sent you an email regarding this problem.

    Here’s my video: http://www.vimeo.com/15712873

I would be really upset, if no one comments on my project just because of a technical error or something. :(

    So please add my video,
    many thanks in advance!

    best regards,
    Stefan Voigt

    • The Gorilla says:

Sorry, James. Deadlines are part of the rules and deadlines are CRITICAL in this business. Learning how to hit deadlines is one of the best things you can learn to do. It’s a great piece though. Hope to have a new theme up in a week or so. Cheers!

Hi, Nick))) I’m also a little bit late for this 5 sec project…I knew about deadlines, but I had some unexpectable problem with dispaying in picture viewer when was rendering…I spend 2 days for resolving this problem and certainly I missed a deadline…But however I decided to extend a little bit project and idea….http://vimeo.com/15828099

    • The Gorilla says:

Great one. Sorry about the deadline, though. We will have a new theme next week I hope

    • Vladimir says:

You don’t have to sorry))) It’s my problem…I spent two days trying to find a problem(particles didn’t appeared on final render)…I read a lot articles on forums about this problem but really didn’t find anything)…It was simply just global level of details in render settings)))))))))but I had a lot of fun))))

  64. Carmina says:

Hi! I did submit my video on Sunday but I can’t find it linked in your Vimeo Channel… didn’t I submit it on time?¿ what’s the problem?
