A Look Forward at Greyscalegorilla 136 Comments

Greyscalegorilla got hacked yesterday. Somebody got in through an old author account on my blog and wrote some silly things about how I’m done making tutorials and how I shouldn’t be doing this site in the first place. It was a bummer. I deleted it from the site, but it still shows up on some RSS feeds. So, I decided to talk about it here so you can hear this directly from me.

What was written in that post is the opposite of how I feel. Let me be clear. I LOVE Greyscalegorilla and everything this site has turned out to be. I LOVE making tutorials, giving talks, and writing posts to help people learn all this fun stuff. We also LOVE making useful tools and plugins to help make your job easier and more beautiful. Expect much more of all of this.

The best thing that came out of this though, were the comments written below the fake post that said how much Greyscalegorilla helped them and encouraging me to make more tutorials and not to give up. These comments alone were worth the hack. It was wonderful to read such nice and supportive comments from you guys. Thank you so much for your support yesterday and though the years.

MUCH more Greyscalegorilla to come…

Thank you!
Nick

I didn’t see the hacked post but for the record GSG has been instrumental in feeding my passion for C4D. I still suck, but get better all the time and that’s thanks to Nick, Chris Lord knows hacking a blog is a lot easier than learning C4D. When I grow up I want to be the Gorilla.

There’s always some jealous kid around wishing his/her site was as helpfull as yours is. However, hacking one of the best (if not the best) C4D tutorial site is not the best way to go. Just keep smiling, laughing and most importantly of all: keep up the awesome work!!

    Best regards from The Netherlands,

p.s. I’m checking this site every day in the hope of something new, unfortunately, nothing is there… Are there any tutorials planned for this next week?

    Thanks so much for clarifying.

The post yesterday was such a bad mood, that I have had to think about it twice… and even didn’t figure out how you feel.

But now I know you will go forward with the site and your great tutorials!

I tried to post a comment yesterday, but when it was finished and I tried to post it, the article has already been deleted from you.

Just let me tell you how my comment started:
“You name yourself a gorilla – be a gorilla!
Don’t let others force you to shutdown your great site!…”

GSG – keep up your great work!
    Thank you very much.

I wouldn’t sweat the hack. You have such a loyal and respected following. (count me among them) Finding quality tutorials and motion graphic tips, that aren’t geared to taking your money, is hard to find these days. Keep up the great work at GSG and you will always have that fan base. See you in Vegas, as I teach at UNLV and am only two blocks from the hall of fame.

GSG is the best site to learn Cinema 4D (better so long than the own Maxon site). Something like the C4D Encyclopedia. Also, the use of After Effects, Photoshop, and other relevant software for graphic design and video edition, are so instructive for me, and I’ve learned so many tips and techniques in this site that, in fact, it is the first in my favorite bookmarks. I hope from all of you guys to stand there for many time. Thanx a lot to Nick and the rest of the team.

GSG is the reason I started using C4D in the first place, when your tutorials showed me that it was nowhere near as scary as it looks when you first open it up.

WOW that is so damn low, the fact that someone put all that time and effort into trying to make the community think of you with their same close-minded self-righteous perspective. Glad you don’t let all those pretentious pricks out there get to you, and that you’ll keep doin what you love and continue helping the community in so many different ways, despite the haters. That whole rant about giving up on tuts cause “This kind of knowledge should be self-acquired through the desire to implement an idea. Your imagination needs to drive your quest for knowledge” is ridiculous – that IS (and has been) your underlying philosophy all along- experiment, play, nourish your passion. Like you’re always saying: its not the how that matters, but the why.

For me, showing how to do specific techniques with tuts is a way to open your mind to different possibilities so you make new connections and delve deeper with your tools – not to mention it helps to know what button does what. As far as the lightkits and textures – they can be great tools for learning if you dig in and explore all the settings/setups; and/or be a great time/mental energy saver if your chief concern is the story or idea, and don’t wanna spend endless hours building every single element from scratch (altho if you do have that kinda time/attention span, even better!) It sucks that the ever-growing population of lazy wannabe motion designers are copying all your tuts verbatim and using your tools without even trying to push them into something unique – and in a lot of ways, it’s tainting the industry – but to blame you is like…uh, I dunno, blaming Ernest Rutherford for Hiroshima cause he figured out how to split the atom (ok, maybe not quite that extreme…i suck with analogies…but you get the point)

Besides all the tuts, you’ve introduced me to so many great non-motion graphicky things and people (seth godin, steven pressfield) over the years that had a huge impact on my life. And after firing my boss last year and taking the plunge into the wonderful world of making a living doing what I love, on my terms- you’ve given me (and everyone else who cares for that matter) so much great advice and hope that it really is possible.

I realize I’m pretty much preachin to the choir, and I never actually post on forums, AND I’m procrastinating on a big freakin deadline in a coupla days with a coupla sleepness nights left of animating circus animals mauling theater mask cartoon characters and other freakshow wonders. But when I saw this I felt compelled to mash my keyboard with anger and gratitude. Sorry for the long rant. Ok back to work…

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. But, be a man about it. If you disagree with Nick providing free teaching for years, and then leveraging a little to get paid for it, then say so with your own name in a forum of peers. If your opinions are perceived as valid, you will find support. If they are not, you will have to defend them.

Just read the hacked post. That was so awful, and clearly came from a jealous, small person.

And apparently it’s also someone who can’t really tell the difference between conceptualization and implementation: just because you like one doesn’t mean you have to do the other. I enjoy conceptualization more, some people enjoy bringing a ready idea to life. Different strokes for different folks, and the person who hacked GSG sounds very insecure in what they do if they feel they need to attack someone for that.

Good on you for shining through, Nick! Keep up the good work.

I saw the hacked post this past weekend and was dumbfounded when I read it. Disappointed to know you got hacked, Nick, but so glad to see your response. Thank you so much for all you’ve done. Your talent and generosity is greatly appreciated.

  89. Hi Nick. It’s a shame some people don’t like people when others do good or have vision. It’s worse when they feel they have to put a spanner in the works. But hey, you know what? these things are minor now. You and Chris are doing a fantastic job. You inspire me whenever I look at your site and see what you have achieved. Keep doing what you do and don’t let them get you down. I’m sure I speak for lots over here in the UK when I say Well Done and we are behind you! Really appreciate the tutorials.
    Best wishes, Sid

    Hey Nick,

GSG has been top-notch since I discovered it and it has helped me gain knowledge quickly that otherwise would have taken much more time. In short – you ROCK!
    Keep up the awesome work!

    Many Thanks – Mike

The author of the article could have make a better argumentation…

Sharing what you learn for free is a very generous work, particularly for the students, and I think it takes years before you can make a significant amount of money.
Also he clearly didn’t listened to your talks or saw the five seconds projects to say that you dissuade people to try to do things by themselve.

    Thanks for what you do.
    You do it right.

    I think you’re an idiot.
Most people actually working in the industry do.

There will always be a small percentage of people who for some reason would disagree with you, Nick. It’s an insignificant number compared to all the people that follow your work and appreciate your amazing contribution.
Thank you for your hard work and inspiration.

    Hi Nick,

I have been following you for sometime, and I would like to say that your work has inspired not only me, but also other colleagues of mine at the “UNITED NATIONS,” namely the Department of Public information and UNTV. If it were not for this site, know one would be interested in learning this program in the first place. If someone disagrees with me, that’s fine. But, I know it’s hard finding a quality tutorial on the web, and videocoplit’s site in my opinion is not as practical as yours. Therefore, the only person who would hack a tutorial site is a pathetic/jealous person who does not want the 3D community to grow. This not only hurts greyscalegorilla, but it also hurts Maxon, me, and other artist who turn to this site for inspiration. That being said, a hacker is only interested in not seeing others blossom beyond their basic comprehension of the program. Moreover, the hacker fails to realize that he is also hurting himself by threating a creative community and future generations. Without people like you, the next generation will never have the next Paul Clements’ or a Monkey that can inspire people. Creativity only feeds Creativity. Without this community, I personally think Maxon would lose market share if this forum dies. It’s not like everybody on the planet owns Cinema 4D.

    I haven’t used c4d in like 2years
Picked it up a couple or so days ago and rendered a text animation
    I used GSG LKP.
The client liked it so much, they are discussing employing me
I had to leave a nasty comment on VCP couple of days ago as well.

Any comments like that only serve as fuel, use it wisely NICK. bless you

    Nick,

Really sorry to hear about this but please keep up the amazing work both in your tutorials and plug-ins for C4D. Watched a video of yours from a breakfast speech you gave and you’re simply boss and an inspiration my friend. I’ve heard before if you inspire one person in this life you’ve done a lot and I think there are many votes for you out there. I’d give you one hands down.

Just like you were inspired by MK12(yes…this dates me as well)many are inspired by you and the awesomeness you bring. Be well.

    Nick,
There will always be people who are jealous of success at any given level. I am an over the hill, new product engineer who happened to stumbled across your site and am very grateful that I did. I love to take my products up a level or two when presenting them to the customer. You give me inspiration to do just that and you seem to give inspiration to everyone you speak to. Why else would organizations want you to come and speak at their facilities? The fact that someone would take the time to try and hurt your on going inspirational, instructional, vision, in my mind, only confirms that fact that you are right on tract. I wish the best and continued success.

Hi Nick haven’t checked in for weeks and sorry to hear about the hack thing. Being a c4d beginner as well as a none-english-speaker, it’s not easy for me to find a nice portal entering this domain. Thanks for your clear, concise and helpful information that do give a big hand. Keep on:)
