    • Nice modeling Spencer! Cut it down a bit though and repost so I can add it to the channel. It’s a bit long for a five second project. Thanks!!!

Um, peeps, it’s 5 SECOND projects. How come people have so much trouble keeping them to just 5 seconds. I may be incorrect but I thought Nick’s entire purpose of these being 5 second projects is to have an end result that is awesome.

I know he talks about how long it takes just to get 5 great seconds of animation, which is why everyone should be editing their content to a strict SOLID 5 seconds only, tired of seeing top finalist coming in with projects over the 5 second mark.

(Spencerf – your project is 13 seconds?)

    • Yeah, I agree about this one. 7 or 8 is OK, but I don’t think I can accept videos longer than ten seconds anymore. I may have to finally make a rules section eh?

I specifically think I remember you saying, to have 5 great seconds of animation, is to have something that is resolved within that timeframe and is then possible in throwing into a reel as supplementary eye candy if need be or something along those lines… which I agree is totally the purpose, as well as tuning your editing skills to make only what’s necessary happen in a shorter given timeframe, hence the CHALLENGE! I am getting involved on this project.

  2. sounds cool!

I think the point is it’s meant o be short. I reckon if you go over to 7 secs its fine, but yeah Spencerf, you really have no reason to go over 5 secs there..

i already know some people are going to make food move fast in the composition, thinking its clever… that would make me laugh :)

    Reply
    • that’s just what I’m going to do. I’ve spent 2 hours trying to come up with a clever idea, which felt more than enough. So I’ll do something simple and try hard to make it look good.
After all I do this to learn technique.. maybe I’m wrong. Is this all about lateral thinking?! Omg The doubts! Nooooooooo!

  4. Nick, once i saw website for 5 second project, now i can’t find it. Are you decided to not start this page?

    • We are debating on if we are going to keep FiveSecondProjects on GSG or move it to it’s own site. Stay tuned.

I recommend you just make another tab: like the blog, daily photo, about…just add five second project

  5. why people don’t read???
when somebody says 5 seconds are 5 seconds… and when the theame is fast food… it doesn’t mean cities!! LOL

    Reply
    • Yeah, this has been happening more and more. I want to encourage people to make something (anything) for the project, but I may have to start enforcing some rules. Maybe an official announcement will help?

I’m gonna guess the city one is just a re-used project as it has type specific to something else that I wouldn’t expect came as a result of thinking of fast food

Maybe 5 seconds just isn’t enough time. Maybe it should be 10 seconds or less. You can’t really build up to something and have a “punchline” in just 5 seconds.

    • Actually – You Can…
but almost in 98% of the time you need a second opinion to see it :)
If you do it by yourself and judge it – you love all of it. So you won’t see the garbage in there. /opposite to this logic there’s 24h movie, 8h movie and etc…/

    • This is what I’m talkin about! Excellent 5 second project, look at all that happened in this one (i know it’s 6 seconds, but it could happen in 5!) This is intriguing and resolving itself all in 5 seconds! So Well Done!

        merci monsieur

but i was really having a hard time, trying to fit everything in such a short timeline, personally i would prefer a 8 or 10 second compettition, sice this would make possible to create some sort of narration

        Reply
        • Yeah, five seconds is short, but it’s concept is to fill out your demo reel and allow you to try out new things. For longer pieces, you could try to submit to a film festival.

maybe there is something between 5 sec. clip and full feature or short film but anyways its fun and a good practice

  7. Five seconds. That’s the name of the contest and should be the instantaneous cut-off for entries. Why on earth is there any debate about this, or talk of ‘no more than ten seconds’?

To allow anyone to ‘sneak in’ even an extra second is absurd. Whatever the content of the piece — from brilliant to mundane — for the creative to take liberty in the length of the timeline is not only presumptive, it’s downright rude. (Not to mention unfair to those of us who’ve strived to maintain the integrity of the contest, as set out in the ground rules.)

That’s my two cents, and I’m stickin’ to it.

  8. I love the idea of this being just FIVE seconds… it makes me feel like this is a contest i can take part in!

Does a stop motion fit in? becouse i only see graphin animation…
however, i loved enough the idea i came up with, to star it right now.. i hope it fits! and finish it soon to share it.

Total congratulations for your work here in the blog Nick! i totally love it…. !!

    • Stop motion is totally accepted. The tentative rules list is, Animated, Five Seconds, and has something to do with the theme. That’s all it takes to enter. I can’t wait to see it.

This is only my second attempt at a motion piece, tried out the 3D spaces in AE and some camera movement. First time I contribute to the gorilla but expect more, got a lot of inspiration from this. Great stuff!

Any feedback is welcome but bear in mind that I’m completely new to AE and animation :P

    • Great job dude, I love the banana…the eye movement is great…you have to watch it a couple of times, there is alot happening in this 5 seconds…

    • Thanks Serge,

I try to add a lot of little nuance and detail to as much as I can, especially when we only have 5 seconds to work within.

I even puppeted the banana’s Chucks to bend with each step..

  10. Hey Nick (and others), here’s my entry… “Double Cheese” Painstakingly made in c4d! all hand modelled and animated. Flames and smoke from Action Essentials 2 from video-copilot (thanks Andrew!) Trying to squeeze this into 5secs was a challenge in its self. Hope you guys like this one!
