  1. Cool! I wanted to participate ever since I first started reading the GSG blog, back in june. This time I’m in! Looking forward to the cool creations that come out of this one!

  2. I really like the way you help the community in this way – this is more effective than any reelcritique videos, which cost you more time and basically only help the one critiqued.

I’m probably getting a new PC the next weeks – Although I have no motiondesign skills whatsoever, I think I will give your 5 second projects a shot some time this year :)

I’m using the demo version, so I can’t do commercial things. Does this count as noncommercial?

    • Davy Menge

Commercial basically means you get money for it. So yes, 5 sec projects are non-commercial, unless you sell them :)

I’d check what Davy says a little more carefully. Pro-bono work could be considered commercial use of software by some companies depending on their EULA. This particular contest could be considered commercial if there were a prize that has monetary value.

For the most part this type of contest would not be considered commercial work. I am sure that you are in a safe zone for this one.

Hey! bud, I’m very disappointed of you site, It use to be super nice when you use to do most Cinema 4D Tutorials! What happen–did you drop the ball. Still waiting for you to finishing all the functions on Cinema 4D R12???? All the 5 sec, projects are for the Birds!

    • I think your feedback is appreciated but personally I believe that disappointment may be going a little far, no?

Nick really devotes so much of his personal time to creating amazing insight into different aspects of the Motion Community and I can’t imagine how hard it is to taylor to 10′s of thousands of people requesting different things.

Through all the C4D education he has bestowed upon us he figured out for himself what He wants to focus his attention on and its a strong focus in lighting in C4D. In his live casts he’s stated many times now that if you are looking for someone to create a particle dissolving logo, this is not the place to find that and that its something we will all have to research ourselves.

I don’t want to turn you away because like the many here I am just another animator looking to create cool shit. I value Nicks knowledge as much as I would if I were attending school and he was my teacher.

Mind my rant and I hope it helps you become a little less disappointed with Nicks direction.

5 second projects are great – just what I needed to keep the blood flowing through my brain. Seriously, do not give up on these! Hopefully there is some enjoyment involved for you as the one who gets to go through and watch them, probably a bit of a relief in your week :)

Thanks, looking to submit more in the future.

  8. Hey Nick, I have a problem. I uploaded a video and added it to the five second project channel, but then i wanted to change the video so i deleted the first one and uploaded a new one. But now it is acting like the other video is still there, so I can’t put the new one on the page.

  9. while I’m trying to create every item from scratch, the question came to me – what is the general feeling about any use of pre-existing objects, materials, or even packaged object collections? On one hand I want to be 100 percent original – but on the other, why re-invent the wheel if one is available for use without any infringement?

  11. I’m also a first time poster. I decided to finally jump into this and make it my very FIRST motion graphics piece ever / my first attempt at any animation on after effects on my own, after months of just farting around with tutorial stuff.

  12. what are the chances of extending the deadline for a week or so? i’d love to participate but just can’t right now…

    • The deadlines are always two weeks per project. But stay tuned to GSG. We usually announce a new one every month or so.

This one took WAY longer than I thought it would, so I didn’t get it finished. But I guess a work in progress is better than nothing, right? I hope a work in progress is still okay to post.

I will have to post the final video, once I actually finish it.

    Thanks!

So here is the story, I originally decided to make an animé like animation with a character who could rewind time.
I got to the final stages and realised that I would not finish in time.
I quickly shot a clip on my phone and added some motion tracking to it. With two of the robots, the original file had rain falling and the larger robot reversed the rain, this took ages to render but it didn’t show up in the final composition so this is all I have, no cool rewind effects and I still didn’t finish in time anyway. :D

  15. Dang! I thought the deadline was Tuesday night for some reason

Every time you run one of these Nick, I get some paying gig that saps all my time and I can’t get something done by the deadline.

So can you run them more frequently? I could use the money.

I know I’m too late, but after watching your speech on the gap telling we just have to finish shit and move on, I decided to finish my 5 seconds of reverse.
