What Are Five Second Projects?
We all want to make cool shit for our demo reel right? Sometimes you just need a theme to get you started… Some rules to fight against. Use the theme “Reverse” to make a five second motion piece and enter it into the form below. If your new to five second projects, why not check out the Five Second Projects Archive to see all of the past themes and winners.
Rules
1. Submissions must be Five Seconds Long!
2. Only animation is accepted. Video only submissions will not.
3. The animations has to do with the theme in some way.
4. Original Work only. Don’t cut out 5 seconds of already made work.
5. Link back to GSG on your Vimeo Post
Why Should You Enter?
1. Try new techniques or software
2. Limitations help get the mind working.
3. Make short, awesome pieces for your reel.
4. Get critique from your peers.
5. Promote yourself.
How Do I Enter my Video?
1. Create a five second animation based on the theme.
2. Upload your video to Vimeo. Don’t forget to add a link back to this blog post.
3. Submit your link to the form below and I will add it to the channel
4. Deadline is Sunday, January 30th.
We are no longer excepting entries. Thank you to all those who entered!

Cool.
I’ll try to enter this time.

Cool! I wanted to participate ever since I first started reading the GSG blog, back in june. This time I’m in! Looking forward to the cool creations that come out of this one!
Pranjal
Will give it a try !

I really like the way you help the community in this way – this is more effective than any reelcritique videos, which cost you more time and basically only help the one critiqued.
I’m probably getting a new PC the next weeks – Although I have no motiondesign skills whatsoever, I think I will give your 5 second projects a shot some time this year

I’m using the demo version, so I can’t do commercial things. Does this count as noncommercial?
Hamilton
Not commercial.
Davy Menge
Commercial basically means you get money for it. So yes, 5 sec projects are non-commercial, unless you sell them
Kerry Mortensen
I’d check what Davy says a little more carefully. Pro-bono work could be considered commercial use of software by some companies depending on their EULA. This particular contest could be considered commercial if there were a prize that has monetary value.
For the most part this type of contest would not be considered commercial work. I am sure that you are in a safe zone for this one.
asymptoteell
alright. Thanks, everyone. I just wanted to make sure.

Great theme! :]
Angel
I´m so so amateur, besides i have my college tests until February. My question is, can i start my five second proyect now and submit it in another moment or it always be a different specific theme? Like now “Reverse”. Thanks!
Mathias Refshøj
every theme have a deadline, and next time it will be a new theme
Cant wait to enter this time!
Angel
So I´ll try the next one. I don´t have enough time for this one… Thank for the answere!

Hey! bud, I’m very disappointed of you site, It use to be super nice when you use to do most Cinema 4D Tutorials! What happen–did you drop the ball. Still waiting for you to finishing all the functions on Cinema 4D R12???? All the 5 sec, projects are for the Birds!
The Gorilla
More tuts on the way, Mario. What tuts about 12 would you like to see?
Lukasz
I think your feedback is appreciated but personally I believe that disappointment may be going a little far, no?
Nick really devotes so much of his personal time to creating amazing insight into different aspects of the Motion Community and I can’t imagine how hard it is to taylor to 10′s of thousands of people requesting different things.
Through all the C4D education he has bestowed upon us he figured out for himself what He wants to focus his attention on and its a strong focus in lighting in C4D. In his live casts he’s stated many times now that if you are looking for someone to create a particle dissolving logo, this is not the place to find that and that its something we will all have to research ourselves.
I don’t want to turn you away because like the many here I am just another animator looking to create cool shit. I value Nicks knowledge as much as I would if I were attending school and he was my teacher.
Mind my rant and I hope it helps you become a little less disappointed with Nicks direction.
Jacob
ahh you just trolling, didn’t your mamma tell you not to hate on things that are free. Go pay for a membership at cineversity, and hate on it.
S3B
hey dude, don’t touche the Gorilla !
think i’m gonna participate to this 5 second project. i’ve got some ideas and i’m a Bird !
S3B

Mario
Hey! Bud, more Dynamics & MoGraph tutorials will be nice…:)
In my opinion, I think that you are one of the best trainers out there—keep up the good work!

5 second projects are great – just what I needed to keep the blood flowing through my brain. Seriously, do not give up on these! Hopefully there is some enjoyment involved for you as the one who gets to go through and watch them, probably a bit of a relief in your week
Thanks, looking to submit more in the future.

Hey Nick, I have a problem. I uploaded a video and added it to the five second project channel, but then i wanted to change the video so i deleted the first one and uploaded a new one. But now it is acting like the other video is still there, so I can’t put the new one on the page.
Bob
while I’m trying to create every item from scratch, the question came to me – what is the general feeling about any use of pre-existing objects, materials, or even packaged object collections? On one hand I want to be 100 percent original – but on the other, why re-invent the wheel if one is available for use without any infringement?
Rioneru
I will see this week-end if i have some time!
i hope so…

Nick… I can’t wait for City Builder!!!
The Gorilla
DOPE! Looks great so far. I think you will love the city kit!
Hamilton
If you had just the front grills and just below on the road in focus I think it would punch it up. Just a thought.
Chris Slowik
yea nick, city kit will help im sure with render times!

This is a fun one, I really hope I can finish in time, if not I will still finish and post the end result to the facebook group. I am trying to show a simple action scene in five seconds, Kind of like an old cartoon intro, here is the character.

I’m also a first time poster. I decided to finally jump into this and make it my very FIRST motion graphics piece ever / my first attempt at any animation on after effects on my own, after months of just farting around with tutorial stuff.

what are the chances of extending the deadline for a week or so? i’d love to participate but just can’t right now…
The Gorilla
The deadlines are always two weeks per project. But stay tuned to GSG. We usually announce a new one every month or so.

This one took WAY longer than I thought it would, so I didn’t get it finished. But I guess a work in progress is better than nothing, right? I hope a work in progress is still okay to post.
I will have to post the final video, once I actually finish it.
Thanks!
Jason Poley
i do need to get out of the habit of using the word in the animation. next time eh.

So here is the story, I originally decided to make an animé like animation with a character who could rewind time.
I got to the final stages and realised that I would not finish in time.
I quickly shot a clip on my phone and added some motion tracking to it. With two of the robots, the original file had rain falling and the larger robot reversed the rain, this took ages to render but it didn’t show up in the final composition so this is all I have, no cool rewind effects and I still didn’t finish in time anyway.

Afffff i’m late (x_O)

GL all…there’s some sick videos
Pietr
Dang! I thought the deadline was Tuesday night for some reason
Every time you run one of these Nick, I get some paying gig that saps all my time and I can’t get something done by the deadline.
So can you run them more frequently? I could use the money.
Bryan
Missed the boat, but decided to “ship” instead of tweaking things to death. I can “upgrade” in the next release.

I know I’m too late, but after watching your speech on the gap telling we just have to finish shit and move on, I decided to finish my 5 seconds of reverse.
