Cinema 4D Dynamics Connector Series: Cardan 27 Comments


In this second video in the connector series, Chris focuses completely on the Cardan Connector. Mainly by making a spinning spiked ball of destruction. The ideas for using the Cardan connector were a bit sparse. If anyone knows of some awesome use of the Cardan connector please mention it in the comments.

    Thanks Chris.
    I think the problems you were getting when setting the limits were caused by the Cardan object being misaligned. Had the brown cylinder been aligned with ‘top’ and the blue cylinder been aligned with ‘bot’ the Cardan would have rotated with the object correctly.

    Love your Tutorials Chris!

    Is it possible to combine the connectors with a rig? Does it make sense?
    You made an awesome tutorial about how to rig a hydraulic arm. So for example to make a rigged hydraulic four-legged thing walk and interact with the floor driven by motors & connectors.

    I know a rig is mainly used to create precise predefined movements but its hard to get that “simulated” interaction with other objects so that it also behaves like a “dynamic body”.

    you have solved a problem that has been destroying my life for about three months now so, although there were no fighting robots this time, it was certainly useful to me at least :)
    Just a thought for your chair wheels, I wonder if you had increased the friction of the floor and the wheels they might have followed better?

    Loved it .. even if no robots were harmed in the making of this video…

    A while ago I seen a video about different gears made in the 1930
    Mechanical Principles (1930) by Ralph Steiner

    And I was just trying to make the same kind of odd looking gears I think they look really interesting.

    I never really got a good result using C4d. thought you had to use a program like Auto desk Inverter or some thing.

  8. Please, I’m in trouble with Dynamics in R13… I’m trying to follow Cherry 7UP tutorial but I can’t find “Follow Animation” option into the Rigid Body Tag… It seams that something is changed in R13… Thank you in advance!

    Hey Chris,

    The Cardan joint is used to add a bend to a rod that provides rotary motion, so you could turn a crank around a corner, rather than just in a straight line from the motor. You assemble the rod from two or more parts, each connected by a cardan/universal joint that keeps the whole thing turning.

    Loving the tutorials!! You guys have expedited my c4d education tremendously.

    I think I know why your wheel board wasn’t working like you thought. The office chair wheels’ (also known as castors) have their vertical axis off centered from the actual wheel axis so that they all twist into position before they start rolling.

    Sorry, I had to mention it. It was driving me crazy.

  16. Hey Chris!

    What if u cut a whole into the first connecting cylinder? Or make it a tube. That way the two objects shouldnt collide within each other and u could turn ignore collisions off. I dont like this method of putting extra tubes around the object. Feels kind of messy and incorrect.
