Smash A Van With Plastic Deformation In Cinema 4D 70 Comments
In this tutorial, Chris shows you how to smash up a van using Plastic Deformation and the Mesh Deformer In Cinema 4D. Also, he shows you how to prepare a model to be used with Mesh Deformer and how to create a low poly proxy to be used for the dynamic simulation.

just one thing, why don’t you put the glass exploding? will be great!
-
OMG! This is awesome!!!!
-
Thank You! I love your Tuts!
-
I think it’s safe to say that this tutorial is awesome!
-
Fucking genius!

Now, 3 years with you. I knew you in a time where I lost hope in every thing after getting bad news about my health, but from the moment that I visited your website by chance every thing has changed to be better and greater which is going after what I love and passionate about and that changed every issue into an easy task to handle and over come. You don’t only give tutorials, you give hope and ambition with them that everyone can be good in what he does and what he loves. Your star is always bright and shine. Every time you bring something new, unique and marvellous. You are the only person that I know who is ALWAYS getting more creative and beautiful in both; personality and work.
Blesses all over you Nick.
Greets and respects from Kuwait.

Wow, that was really beatiful! Hope Nick reads this, even though it’s not for me it warmed my heart!
OT: Great tutorial!

Wonderful comment. I agree. Thanks from Caracas – Venezuela.

I can’t see the elastic limit option in dynamics body tag!
-
Same here ?
-
Is it new in R14 ?
-
I think it is
-
is there any other option that we can pick to make it retain the crush on the van?

chris,
When you were in point mode making the proxy object you were moving the points around freely. When I try that I’m restrict to just the up down axis with a weird double arrow without holding down the shift modifier. Anybody know how to fix this? I can’t find it in preferences. In R12, the last version I’ve been using this wasn’t a problem.-
What do U mean by ‘weird double arrow’?
Chris is mostly using the ‘move bands’ [i don't know the proper english word for this, since i'm using the german version] to stay in X/Y, X/Z or Y/Z -level. Check Ur filter-menu in the viewport if it is turned on.

Very nice!

awesome
i wounder what happen if you combine this with proximal shader -
You guys are amazing!

Great Tutorial.
Chris is at his best when he’s crashing or destroying objects. Sound effects and all.
-
that was really awesome.. thanks so much for posting it.

I tried with a much higher poly count, 3 Ferrari Enzos. Worked flawlessly, never used the mesh deformer before and I think I will be using it constantly in the future. Was able to run the simulation at the same speed as I did when I followed the Tut with the van. So nice to be able to use high poly models with soft-body physics. You can see the seats inside the car getting deformed as well as the body of the car, which I think is sick. Also, for Chris, I’d love to know what the alternative to the connect+delete is, I use the function often and run into problems with textures and object orientations etc.
(Btw, when you fuse multiple editable objects with different textures, each texture is set to a portion of the object’s polygons, you can select all the polygons with a particular texture in an object by double clicking on the orange triangles where all the other tags are in the object)
– This bypasses what chris was doing with moving the glass up 300cm, selecting those particular polygons and deleting them, then moving the frames back down. You can just select all polygons with the glass texture and delete them.-
That looks great! Amazing the results we get from such a simple low poly version. The Connect Object trick was a simple way to connect a bunch of objects and maintain their material tags, but it starts compounding a lot of tags on one object which can slow things down.
Rock!

Awesome … thx a ton guys for bringing us C4D lovers another amazing tutorial. Keep up the gr8 work. Cheers.
-
nice, although it reminds me allot of one of the rocketpanda’s projects.
-
well, it’s just a technique!

Nice job Chris!

-
Great! A really nice test!
-
Very nice tips
Not uselss blabla like Nick, you go straight to the point, I like that !
HF-
Nick… Useless Blabla? Are you daft?

This just looks amazing. Learnt so much from this site, can’t thank you enough for all the time and effort you guys put into your tutorials. I use this site every day!! Cheers.
-
Very nice and funny (I love your “sound effects” when crashing the bus) tutorial.
but I’m still waiting for “the” camera calibrator tutorial (from Nick I presume) -
I can’t see the elastic limit option either, is this tutorial only for R14 ?
-
Hey John, Yes this is an R14 Tutorial showing off the new Plastic Deformation.

-
NICEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE POW.

Hi Nick; someday you share with us some kind 3D models Im looking site but I cant find it? if you remember please share link to page? Thanks to nice tuts.

Wondering if someone can help me out here.
I’m trying to do a combo of this tutorial and Nicks baseball tut.
I have a soccer ball that has the “cage” of a parametric sphere with soft body dynamics.
Everything is working well with the dynamics except when I render in the picture viewer the soccer ball is gone. Viewport render is fine.
I changed the mesh parameter “External” from “surface” to “none” and I got the ball in the picture viewer window but it’s doesn’t follow the animation.Any clues?
-
I’m not sure from all the info you, gave, but when you use spheres, sometimes there are problems with keeping “render perfect” on in the object settings. I’m not sure what you are doing with the spheres so I don’t know if it is effected by it or not, but couldn’t hurt to see if that’s the problem.

So awesome! Loving the look of R14. Can’t wait to pick it up.
-
Having trouble taking the rigged or ‘initiated’ state of the VW Bus and trying to smash it essentially into a clone of itself but it seems to brake the collision awareness. Can someone guess as to why that happens?
-
Can this be done some how with R13 ?
-
very good like man
-
hey sweet tutorial and effect have bee n following your site and must admit this is crazy stuff and helps a lot for any motion graphic artist. thank you…..
btw just to ask you i cant get the elasticity parameter … he mentioned r14…
m working in r13 does it have the elasticity parameter, hopw you don’t mind?
-
Hey i just downloaded the Cinema 4d R14 Demo version and i dont have the Rigid Body Option in the tags menu!
-
And dont have the Simulation tag !
-
-
Gorilla Dude, you did it again.
-
I couldn’t get it working with the proxy part I have to look at the video i may have gotten lost in it…but the beginning part was so easy the only problem for me was that I could see sphere denting in the viewport but not when I rendered it remained round and smooth why? I tried looking for and switches seen in viewport and renderer are on …I don’t know what else………..
-
Sorry I had to rewrite what I wrote………………I couldn’t get it working with the proxy part , I may have to look at the video again. I may have gotten lost in it…but the beginning part was so easy the only problem for me was that I could see the sphere denting in the viewport, but not when I rendered it. It remained round and smooth why? I tried looking for and the switches indicating, “seen in viewport and renderer” and they are on …I don’t know what else………..
-
I had the same issue… took me a bit to figure it out. I just missed a step. You have to make the objects editable, something to do with the way it reads it when rendering.
-
Thank you Kyle! That was it! I appreciate your help..:)
-
-

-
When I put a rigid body tag on anything, I don’t get those menus you have (soft body, etc.) I’m on R14, what should I do?!?! Its the same for most other tags too.
-
i fricking pressed W and it fricking deleted the object view and now i cant fricking see my fricking scene .
-
‘Smashing’ tutorial
But sir Chris: you are going FAAAAAST!
-
bugger, just got to the bit where you need the elastic limit and realised its r14.
Anyone know a work around for r13? I was counting on this method for a project.
-
Amazing tutorial… And i ended with something like this… Render time very long…
-
-
UGHHHH you can’t do this in R13 cause it doesnt have that Elastic Limit option
-
great, now my questions is how to make it work the mograph text ? I am trying to drop one letter on top of another but before the second letter drops in its polygons are splitting up in all directions. Any hint on that ?
thank you.-
ok sorry I got it working now.

Nice tutorial!! I just wanted to know where to get the bank-safe model that you dropped onto the van because i can’t find it anywhere…
Love the tutorial though!
