Stick Textures To Dynamic Objects For a Fun Final Reveal 213 Comments

In this tutorial, I show you how to stick a texture to your dynamic objects so that when they fall to their resting place, their combined textures make an image.

We have been trying to figure out this technique for a while. It eluded us until Farzin entered his Five Second Project Entry. I got so excited to finally see that technique working, I asked him to make a video showing us exactly how he did it and If I could make a longer tutorial for GSG. I can’t stop thinking of fun ways to use this technique and I can’t wait to see what you guys come up with.

not really ;) . That one simply uses a cloner mapped to an object. Or at least it looks so.

Thanks, Farzin and Nick! Good stuff. I’ve been playing with this for a while and it’s a very cool techique.

Just an added tip: Bake the dynamics once you get the one one you want. That way you can scrub your timeline quickly and also really fine tune camera movements through your objects.

    Thanks again!

You could cache your dynamics simulation and that way it won’t keep changing on you, regardless if you change the clones to something new.

      Hi Andrew,

How would I go about caching my dynamics? I recently upgraded to R14 and it seems like the Dynamics keep changing everytime I go back and hit play – even if I don’t change any of the settings. It makes doing this tutorial kind of impossible! I didn’t have the issue on C4D R13 – but I wanted to use the improved Physical renderer in R14.

If I open my project from R13 into R14 – at first it appears fine, but if I hit play – the dynamics completely change from how they originally appeared in R13 – so the texture is all out of whack. The main things seems to be in the gap between the chicklets – much larger in R14.

Thanks for any help you may be able to offer on this – or if anyone else has some pointers I would greatly appreciate!

Hey, thanks for the tutorial. I have a quick question. I am very new to c4D, trying out the demo and wanting to make the switch from 3DS Max. I wanted to see if anyone knows why the simulation tag will work if I apply it to the cloner but it won’t if I apply it to the object. I don’t know if this is a limitation of the demo or not. Thanks!

I think the dynamics-problems are due to the fact that you didn´t deactivate the bakup-cloner, or am I wrong? You made it invisible, but the dynamics are still active anyway, so your invisible backup cloner collides with the textured one, influencing dynamics.

    Reply
    • Matt

You are right! Thanks for this tip – if you delete out the copy of the cloner – it changes the dynamics considerably. Even if it’s invisible. Baking the dynamics seemed to solve this issue for me.

Hey Nick, I sent you a tutorial I made via vimeo a couple days ago that covers something similar to this. It involves creating a shatter transition, then bringing it into AE and retexturing it without having to go back to C4D when you need to update your content. It has similar elements to this tutorial. If you had a chance to take a look at it, let me know! Good to see more people experimenting with this! Its incredibly powerful.

Here’s the first part of the tutorial if you (or anyone else) is interested:

the shatter tutorial uses andrew yang’s plug-in YY UV mapper which is not compatible with after effects 6 so the second half hour of the tutorial on compositing the effect might not be very helpful if you’re using afx6.

This is true. I’ve reached out to Andrew and I hope he updates his plugin. For CS6 users, I would suggest checking out Re:Vision FX’s ReMap Plugin:

    Hey Nick.
There is a way without converting the Cloner!
First map your Texture in Flat Projection Mode on the Cloner.
Then in the Cloner Object Properties change the Fix Texture Option from None to Straight. No need to convert your Cloner, your Texture will stick to the Clones! ;)

Oh damn, seems like this method just works at the very beginning of every simulation… sorry, didn’t checked that first…

Superb tut again:)) Iv tried it just after watched yours. I baked the animation first but after giving texture to the cube. When baking has finished, i selected most useful frame and deleted all maps, select all texture tags and gave them new uw maps. Because of the baking issue, the dynamics are not effected by unwanted situations. I wanted to share this, sorry for my English:))

I’ve tried this, works, but for some reason the texture is also applied to the opposite side (and inverted). i’ve tried setting the ‘side’ option on the tag to front, but did not work.
What seems to have solved the problem was creating a polygon selection on the object to be cloned, selection the faces that u want to receive the projected material and linking the material them.

Oh, my test setup was just a cube, cloned as a grid, material with the desired image applied with flat projection on the cloner, and a second material for the rest of the grid

great tut nick. correct me if im wrong, but, if the accuracy of the end logo resolve is key, then it would be better to do the “generate uv” thing at the end, as you added the camera pullback which is essentially distorting the logo. so i would recommend you do the camera animation first and generate uv last.

    Nick, Chris!

Had a bit of a technical snafu today that led me to a technique question, not completely related to this tutorial – but since I can’t find a way to email you guys, I figured I’d just post a comment and hope it notifies you. (and that you read every comment)

Been using C4D lately to experiment with character animation. Was experimenting with PFTrack’s object tracking and Cinema4D – now there’s already tons of tutorials out there to get beginners set up with matchmoving objects themselves into a physical scene – but I didn’t see anything about using face tracking data points to actually animate rigging controllers or joints.

Was wondering if there was some form of method for linking the point data from a 3d track (Nulls?) to the joints? Perhaps with Xpresso? (Right up Chris’s alley?) – more of saying – How would you guys tackle it?

The basic idea would be to take footage of a face, track it, and have the points from the face track control joints in the face rig.. thus animating the face rig based on the original face footage…. rather than just tracking the 3d position of the head/face to matchmove an object in 3d space.

I really liked that some of your older tutorials got you excited about playing around with cameras and linking some of the digital methods you have with physical/live action – or even just intended realism. (Bedroom, Loading Docks, etc) – seems like a decent tag team tutorial idea. Thoughts?

  36. Thanks Nick and Team and of course farzin for these great tips!
Now, I have sort of a general question to your process of using the user data menu. I am playing around with this lately and was wondering how I can change the title of that first tab. If I add user data it always sorts it under this main group called “User Data”. Now when I see you using your Light kit and stuff, this highest ranking group is called like the product you are working with.

Could you tell me, how to change this? It sure is more of a cosmetic problem, but one that I’m really stuck with.

But then, when I click play button all clones become located in one coordinate: X:0 Y:0 Z:0 of the newly created Null Object. And all clones start falling from this new ‘zero’ position. Love this tutorial, fantastic for someone new to C4D like me. Having a problem that is really obnoxious. I read through all of the posts first to make sure it hadn’t already been answered…For some reason my interactive render region is showing the dynamics perfectly at frame 90, but none of my exports have the texture right. Even in my render preview the texture comes out jumbled. Before I applied the physical renderer however, my test export looked fine. How can I fix this?

14 hour render and this is what i get! gah :-(

I should add that I’m rendering through the default camera, which is the one I keyframed to create the effect…So that isn’t the problem. The pills aren’t even close to where they are supposed to land according to the interactive render region.

I wish I knew a solution. I don’t think it has to do with you having the broadcast version… I have studio and the same thing is happening. It’s like the behavior of the simulation tag for rigid body changes with each render. So weird. Anyone who knows a solution please share.

Have you checked if your project setting and renders setting have both 24 FPS?

  74. I’m working in Broadcast R13, which only supports dynamics for mograph objects, thus when I make the cloner editable the dynamics no longer apply. does anyone know a work around for this?

    Hey Everyone,

i´m using R14 Studio, but I can´t make the cloner editable like u guys. What happens is that the cloner split up in Instance objects. and if hit play nothing happens, the objects are just still. I can´t figure out what the problem could be. Mabe someone of you can help me.

    Thank you so much

Hey Nick thanks for the wonderful tutorial! I’m a new C4D user and I’ve learned a lot from your work. Im having a bit of a problem with this tutorial though! While setting up my rigid body’s it seems the simulation only works for me when I apply the RB to the cloner object. When I apply it to the cube object itself I get no result!

Im sorry for the first comment I left, I should have checked the comments first to see if anyone else was having the same problem that I ran into and it seems as though someone else did. I understand that different of versions of C4D use Rigid Body’s in different ways, but the problem I am running into has to do with making my cloner object editable, after doing so it deletes my Rigid Body thus producing no simulation, any advice for this particular problem!?

  88. Hello, probably won’t get an answer because I know you guys might have better things to do, but have a setup 2 cloner objects, each contain 22 different textured cubes(logos on them), they all meet in the middle, collide then settle down and I need to project a big logo on this whole setup… Any suggestions?

  89. Just came across this tutorial. Are you getting different Dynamics results when you make your cloner editable because you are converting the Cloner object to a null and the random effector is no longer applied?

If you replace the “Cloner” null with a Fracture object you can reapply the Random effector to your Fracture object. Then make the cubes a child of the Fracture and delete the null

To anyone else using Broadcast who’s stuck at the part when the image scatters after “Generate UVW Coordinates”, and only forms at frame 0, try this:

After putting the layers of editable cubes into a Mograph Fracture with the dynamics tag, go to the last frame where it settles > MoGraph Tag > MoGraph Cache > Bake (the tag should change from red to green)

Duplicate this Fracture with the Cache (lets call this Fracture1) to another Fracture2(turn off view from viewport)

Make Fracture1 editable > select all Texture tags of cube layers > Right click > Generate UVW Coordinates

Delete all cube layers in Fracture2 > bring ALL layers from Fracture1 to Fracture2 > make sure you turn it back on on viewport (and delete Fracture1) > PLAY! it should be able to work now :)

    Hello Nick,

Is it possible to make multiple materials to the cubes. The cubes looks to me like keyboard cubes so i want to apply the keyboard characters add to the cubes + the logo.

I know you can more materials to one object but i’m a beginner en the only way that i learn is through tutorials. Please can you help me?!

there is another way to do this but i don’t know if it works with dynamics. you put the texture on the cloner itself. then under the cloner object properties, there is a menu called ‘fix texture”. i just set that to straight. there are certain projections it won’t work with and uvw is one of them. i just picked flat. you pretty much line the texture up prior to any effectors animating it, then it will stick to those objects while the effector passes through

    Hello Nick,

Is there any way to add sticker on after effects right after rendering Cinema 4D?
I don’t know if it is possible to do it with using “external compositing tag”.

  103. Hey guys. I would be willing to pay someone for some advice because I really want this concept for my video intro for my new company. Let me know if you’re interested. I don’t have a lot to pay but I would be willing to for some expertise.

I have version 12. I’m not good at C4D. Lets start with that. Problem is when I play my animation everything works great. It plays slow obviously but all the pieces eventually get there.

When I render it however, it doesn’t spell out my logo. Not even close. Seems like the dynamics are not as profound in the rendered version. But like I said when everything is played back before rendering it looks just fine.

    Suggestions?

I have my image but how do I make it smaller? When I project it onto the pieces it’s WAAAAAAAY to big.

  105. TheUrbanMineshaft

I don’t want a logo, I want some text to be on there, but when i upload the image it’s all stretched and you can’t make out anything. All I want it to say is:

    “TheUrbanMineshaft”

If you can’t explain how can you at least do it

    Reply
  106. Glen Theusch

You can get the proper proportions back to the initial stretched logo by going to the Texture Tag and changing the Pixel Aspect to 1.333 to match the Film Aspect of 1.333. Not sure if it’s the pro way to do it, but it got my projected logo back to normal size.

Actually, the dynamics just works when i put it on Cloner, if i use on the cube it doesn’t work. So, whan i get to press C to break de Cloner my dynamics (because i use de dinamics on the cloner and not on the cube) stop work.

Sombody knows why the dynamics dont work on the cube only work on the cloner?

      Thanks

I recently watched the Sound Effector tutorial, and thought it would be a nice effect to merge that technique with this one. The idea is to create a grid array of small cubes in a cloner and project an image onto that array. From there, use the sound effector to bounce the cubes up and down to the music. Of course, the sound effector works fine and the image is projected onto the cloner array, but I can’t get the texture/image to stick to the bouncing cubes… Any ideas???

Tried this in R15 latest update. Seems the render in picture viewer is completely different than what is in the editor. Tried it as single frame to check and also all frames. Picture Viewer always renders the same result, meaning the dynamics don’t change with each render, but it doesn’t match the editor. Project settings and render settings are 24fps. I haven’t been able to get this to work up to this point. :(

    Any insight could be helpful.

      Update**

Not sure if anyone else had this problem when trying alternate looks for this. It should be noted that when mixing textures such as a base material and then a separate alpha material to control a logo placement that the base & the alpha must be selected together and it’s necessary that you right click on the base material, NOT the alpha material, when selecting generate UVW coordinates or mixed textures will not work with this technique.

Hope this helps anyone who has run into this!
