Frog View

May 2, 2011 - By

What in the hell is Frog View? We have all seen it in the Camera Menu in Cinema 4D, but what the hell does it do? Let’s try to make something cool with it. If we can’t, maybe we can finally take it the heck out of the menu. Don’t have Cinema 4D? That’s ok. Feel free to make any animation based on the theme, Frog View.

What Are Five Second Projects?

We all want to make cool shit for our demo reel right? Sometimes you just need a theme to get you started… Some rules to fight against. Use the theme “Frog View” to make a five second motion piece and enter it into the form below. If your new to five second projects, why not check out the Five Second Projects Archive to see all of the past themes and winners.

Rules

1. Submissions must be Five Seconds Long!
2. Only animation is accepted. Video only submissions will not.
3. The animations has to do with the theme in some way.
4. Original Work only. Don’t cut out 5 seconds of already made work.
5. Link back to GSG on your Vimeo Post

Why Should You Enter?

1. Try new techniques or software
2. Limitations help get the mind working.
3. Make short, awesome pieces for your reel.
4. Get critique from your peers.
5. Promote yourself.

How Do I Enter my Video?

1. Create a five second animation based on the theme.

2. Upload your video to Vimeo. Don’t forget to add a link back to this blog post.

  • Is this view available in R11.5 as well?

  • so, is it a C4D users’ competition only? or this view can be achieved in other 3D apps ?

  • @Mark

Yes it is available in 11.5. Just go to view, click “camera”, a drop down menu will appear with all the camera angles… including Frog

  • This is only for C4D users?

  • Guilherme Todorov May 2, 2011 at 4:31 pm

Nick you better put some more text to explain this, or you will get more about 3534874 comments asking “It’s only for C4D users?”

What I understood is that you can get the concept behind the frog view and do whatever you want with the idea, right?

  • Intriguing! I dig this spin on things! I’ve never played with this so this is a kickstart to learn something new. Nice one, Nick!

  • Been looking forward to this, missed the last project by a few days. Looking forward to seeing what everyone comes up with!

  • I don’t see how people are confused. We’ve all heard the terms “Bug Eye View”, “Worms View” “Birds Eye View” and we all know what perspective and angle of view we would expect to imagine when these terms are used.

So in any App you want, or even shooting with a real camera do something that represents what a Frog View means to you. Is it low to the ground looking up? Is it bulgy fish eye distortion? is it even in colour. Use your imagination folks and stop taking themes so literally or as only being specific to 1 software application.

Regardless of this being a camera view in C4D this theme could have just as easily been called Horse View, or Nerd View.

    • this theme is actually confusing. there’s a screenshot of the frog view in c4d and it has nothing to do with the real frog view.
And why is this view so little known in c4d? Because there is no use for me. It’s like military view but too distorted to work with.
Sorry Nick, but it’s the first theme which is strange and not really inspiring to me

      • Sorry Bjorn. I know it’s a weird one. It came from a conversation about what the hell that view is for and how to use it. I thought it was time to find out.

  • I just checked out what this frog view in cinema 4d is… I’m gonna have to do some serious brainstorming with this one 😛

  • Frog view!! He he what a theme, got to check out C4D for what it is. Count me in 😉

  • Somebody please make theirs a TV promo for an opinionated group of female frogs (the Frog View)

  • sadly, I wil not be abel to enter, because my computer is rendering a movie (which it has been doing for days) in C4D at the moment…

  • OMG. You actually did it.

  • I’m looking forward to take part of the project … Did anyone realized that vray for c4d doesn’t like frog-perspektive?

  • I can’t even find the frog-view option in R12 D:
    Can anyone help me out?

  • Enough of your ugly hipster mug! Seriously are you that in love with your goofy face that you have to plaster it all over every single image?!?!? Just once, please, show us a pic or a movie without your lazy, nonplussed, hipster douchebag face!

  • Assassination Video Of Bin Laden (Comedy Skit) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r2kqWWvhWEE

    I’m entering this one!

  • Frog view is a more warped version of Isometric view. Isometric format is an 1:1:1 XYZ format, where Frog view is 1:2:1 XYZ…so it’s a bit more lengthened in the Y direction.

  • Je relève le défis !

let’s talk about something else :

do you plan a tuto about cell shading Nick ?

  • The frog view in C4D is really bizar, as it looks totally different from what’s commonly known as a “frog’s view camera angle”.

And if it supposed to be just that, then they have some seriously acid-trippin humongous frogs in Maxon’s backyard! 😉

  • hell… this is going to be painfull…
the frog view its quite complicaded, its like a perspective view but longer y the Y axis. It does not have any conection to my imaginary of frog view (ground view). Its more like a Flyng Frog with astigmatism.
And if you make a camera with this view is imposible any kind of rotation.
    PAINFUUUULLLLLL

  • A) Nice use of a constraint to really get everyone thinking.
    and
    B) I have been waiting on this for a while. Excited!

  • Wow thanks Nick, tutorials and assignments!

  • NOPE. This won’t do. I’ll keep trying.

  • I dont use c4d, i use 3ds max, can you describe how frog view works and can i use pics in the 5 seconds animation composition?

  • wow i am really stumped on how this view could be of any good are help. this should be interesting.

  • I think you have a nice face, and awesome tutorials. Keep up the good work.

  • Hummm tricky, I dont dout my the ability to come up with something that looks good using frog view. But to think of a idea that leavers the mechanic of the frog view is something else; I like isometric views but I wanna come up with something that uses the squash.

  • Hi Nick,

How many entries can I send in?

  • …and by the way, I wish I had a little spare time so I could work on this FSP too…

  • I don’t have C4D. Are there any informative images about what the frog view in C4D looks like? The link by TheWho doesn’t help that much.

  • Only watched one submission so far, nearly finished mine! Although I think I might have taken the title of this project a little too literal..

  • Hi everyone, first 5 seconds project 🙂
Juste entered the video, low definition, trying to follow the guidelines of vimeo and uploading a HD one..

great greyscalegorilla, amazing site and tutorials!

  • Here’s my entry:

    http://vimeo.com/23355123

Was a bit stuck with what to do with it 😛

  • I’m surprised no one posted a frog view reference to help who hasn’t Cinema 🙂

    Here we go:

Yes, these are 50x50x50 cm cubes into a cubical mograph cloner.
    Looks awful!

  • First time I’ve entered the FSP! Here’s mine just in case I submitted the form wrong or something :d

    http://vimeo.com/23338812

  • Submitted via the form, but seen as no ones videos are showing up in the Vimeo channel yet I’ll stick a link here too.

I don’t have Cinema 4D, so I went with the “Feel free to make any animation based on the theme” option instead…

    http://vimeo.com/23661781

  • Tried to do something with that dang camera view. Alas. I did this instead.
