Olympic Gold

February 10, 2014 - By

The Olympics are well underway as the world’s best athletes compete to bring home the gold for their country. Coincidentally, we’re having our own GSG olympics this week!

The competition: use the theme “Olympic Gold” to create a five second animation and submit it on the Five Second Projects page. Our favorite videos will be featured in a post for the world to see. Go for the gold and make your mother proud!

  • Man this is gonna be a great one! Sucks that I can’t find time to make it though

  • Awesome! Can’t wait to get started!

  • Hey just an FYI GSG’s RSS feed is a bit behind, still on Humbug winners.
I’m sure many people (like myself) have been missing the new stuff if they sue RSS to check in.

  • Wow! It’s gonna be interesting.

  • Can never find the link to the vimeo page to watch other peoples entries… cheers to anyone who can help!

  • Is there any way you could to a tutorial on how to make the Olympic rings?

    • I made a quick version of this. I used the circle spline primitive and chose the ring profile with an outer radius of 23.5 inches and an inner radius of 20 inches in the +Z axis. I then put this into an Extrude and extruded it 2 inches on the Z azis. I used the extruded ring so I could texture the caps differently than the extrusions using the C1 selection. I made a chrome material and dropped it on the ring. Then I made a colored material and dropped it on the ring in the Object Manager. I clicked on the new color in the OM and typed in C1 (capital C) in the Selection field. Copy this ring 4 times and give each a different color. The trick is then to position and rotate each ring so they can interlock. Add lighting and you’re done. Here are a couple of screenshots from my Facebook page to show the rotation: https://www.facebook.com/marv.ruona

  • Nice idea, but both the word ‘Olympic’ and the logo are trademarked. The Swiss-based junket is a commercial enterprise worth billions, securing tax exemptions in every city it bankrupts. It’s not beyond them to pursue a violation of trademark.

  • OK, mines uploaded!

Brendan, I made the Olympic rings for my vid, I just used tubes with sections cut out where they intersect, then move the points. Added a hypernurb to each tube and loop cut near the edges to keep a squareish edge.

  • Working on it – but when’s the deadline?

  • I’m not sure if I submitted my video correctly. Is it okay if I leave the link to it here? In the description of my video I added this link https://greyscalegorilla.com/five-second-projects/

Is that what I was supposed to do?

  • Doubt this’ll make the cut, but here you go ?(??ยด)?

  • here’s my attempt, really enjoyed it ๐Ÿ™‚

  • My first ‘5 seconds animation’ entry ๐Ÿ™‚ https://vimeo.com/86991607
Not easy to put everything in 5 seconds ๐Ÿ˜€

  • Can I submit more than one entry?

  • Hey Nick,

this is my video : https://vimeo.com/87203888

  • My first submission : )

Just checking here because in step 2 on the submission page, this part is not clear to me “Don’t forget to add a link back to this page.”

I submitted my Vimeo link in the form here, but am not sure where I link back to this page on Vimeo. If that’s necessary, let me know thanks!

  • Hello Nick. It seems that i can’t submit my video… Can it be fixed ? Thanks.

  • I uploaded my video yesterday here, but I don’t see it on the Olympic gold Vimeo page.
    Here is my 5sec project.

  • Ahh my render took too long and missed the deadline. I know you guys can’t still accept my video but I wanted to send it over anyways, great contest idea. Thanks!
