Self Portrait

February 15, 2010 - By

This one is all about YOU! Make a five second animation about yourself. What you like, what you do, what you know, what you LOVE. Anything really. Just make it personal.

What Are Five Second Projects?
We all want to make cool shit for our demo reel right? Sometimes you just need a theme to get you started… Some rules to fight against. Use the theme “Self Portrait” to make a five second motion piece and link it in the comments of this blog post. Please be sure to post a link in this post’s comments to ensure me seeing it. If your new to five second projects, why not check out the Five Second Projects Archive to see all of the past themes.

1. Submissions must be Five Seconds Long!
2. Only animation is accepted. Video only submissions will not.
3. The animations has to do with the theme in some way.
4. Original Work only. Don’t cut out 5 seconds of already made work.
5. Link back to GSG on your Vimeo Post

Why Should You Enter?

1. Try new techniques or software
2. Limitations help get the mind working.
3. Make short, awesome pieces for your reel.
4. Get critique from your peers.
5. Promote yourself.

How Do I Enter my Video?
1. Create a five second animation based on the theme.
2. Upload your video to Vimeo. Don’t forget to add a link back to this blog post.
3. Post a link to this posts comment thread and I will add it to the Channel.
4. Deadline is Sunday February 28th

Watch the videos here, at the vimeo channel, or at the FiveSecondProjects Archive

    Sounds awesome!
Probably going to get a lot of entries on this one.

  • Let’s go πŸ˜‰

  • Your comment is a waste off time

  • what if you’re really ugly? πŸ˜›

  • James Grochowalski February 15, 2010 at 12:25 pm

You just wasted your time posting that.
You can stay at your mediocrity level while the rest of us continue to learn more and push ourselves to learn more.

Well, just watch the “why should you enter?” film.

  • Hey Nick, you stole this theme from the contest where you made this:
    didn’t you…
Love that video by the way, and it may be an inspiration to the participants of this 5 sec project. πŸ™‚

  • Don’t click on his name “jo.” It just links to a spam porn site. We’ll get someone to delete this asap.

  • cool theme nick!!!
I have more free time this week! see you there guys πŸ™‚

  • Great Idea!

  • Keep it to your self dude.. no one needs to hear how you think our creativeness and opportunities are dumb. If you want to get away from the 5 second projects don’t visit this site.

  • Hey Nick, does it have to be based on our own self portrait?

    • Hi Daniel! I’d reply if you don’t mind πŸ™‚

as Nick wrote “This one is all about YOU! Make a five second animation about yourself.”
so I think yeah, it have to be about you and only you. On the other hand – it’s always up to you actually! Everyone will be glad to see what others come up with! I personally plan to start the 2nd entry if there is still time after the 1st one is finished.

    • Thanks man πŸ™‚

  • I’m digging this one! Hopefully I’ll have time to enter.

  • Nice one, this should be huge!

This theme should very nicely integrate into a show reel.

I think you should make an entry as well every time there’s a five sec project. Would be cool. and then perhaps you could explain how you did it and stuff…

  • good theme – Finally have some time to do one of these

  • i didn`t find a deadline, what is it?

    the theme is challenging.

  • mmmm..never got time to think about myself.Lets give it a try.Best of luck all of you.

  • I’m making something in After Effects!

  • Hey guys !
This is my firt entry to the 5 seconds project πŸ™‚ Thanks Nick,
because of you I try to make cool shit more than ever !

this is my vimeo link :

  • Cool theme!
Break from school next week which of course means after effects 24/7

  • Here is my entry for 5 second project.

hi Nick, its great fun following your blog.
    figured i joined this time
must admit i already had the mesh. Thought i’d give it a try and threw it in a cloner object to play around with the target and thus make it a 5 sec project
After that i added me myself and i text. Then added Dela Soul. So here it is!
Actually starting on the inside of the mesh kinda gives it a Hieronymus Bosch-look and feel.
The portrait also had hair attached, but that don’t work in the cloner, maybe i should have baked in advance.oh well…t’wasn’t much hair anyway

  • Hey, I just found out about this webpage, I love the idea of the project…but when’s the deadline?

  • A little sketch and toon
and a brief telling of my life πŸ˜‰

  • Damn this THEME really got me thinking πŸ˜›

  • It’s my first time in the 5 seconds project πŸ™‚

    Here’s my vimeo link:

  • Okay, I enjoyed my first FSV contest. I spent probably 20 whole minutes on it.. next time I should spend more free time doing such.. I believe this is a great experience for learning and when i speak of the site I tell people that there are kind of lesson plans and this is the HomeWork. Here is my video:
I like it, but i know i could have done a lot better because i know how to do a lot more stuff.. next time i’d like to make a better video for you (the people who view my videos) to watch and enjoy. thanks for watching and participating. glad to have a community like you guys.
    Thank you
    -Sam Welker

  • Here is my 5ser project:

  • Hey there! My entry:

Really enjoyed the project, looking forward to the next one and seeing everyone else’s entries!

  • My first 5 second project. Great site, Nick, just starting to go through your videos.

  • My first 5 second project

  • I have an idea that I think will help people viewing and making the videos for this topic.

I think a good idea is that you give a good detailed description as to why you feel the video fits the topic. I think that should be a rule for this. by writing out a good detailed description it will help you think logically about what your trying to convey in your video and it will help other better understand your creativity.

I think there are some really creative videos but some of the same videos missed the topic mark. One thing that helps me is to story out the design that I’m making. That makes me acknowledge some of the issues of design and inconsistency.

    anyone can help me?
I read vimeo faq and help, but I’m afraid that I have to do another clean upload instead of video replacement.
This would lead me to over exceed the deadline.

    I appreacite any help,
