Balloon Type: Use Vertex Maps To Transition Between Stiff And Soft Dynamics

In this Video, Mario asks us how to make this cool looking Balloon Type from Pierre Bourjo. Luckily, Chris has been learning more about Vertex Maps and he shows us how to use them to make different stiffness in our balloon shape. We also use Soft Body dynamics, Sweep Nurbs, Reflectance, Terrible Cursive, and one Softbox to recreate the look.

Don’t forget to check out this quick lighting tip at the 29 minute mark to see how to light this scene with only ONE softbox.

  • Another great tutorial from GSG..

  • you can click on Apple notifications and drag them off screen to make them go away for a while on OS 10.8.x (newer ones have a “remind me later” thing)

Great tutorial guys, soft bodies are fun!

  • one more thing: If I wanted to animate this (say I started everything flat and then had it inflate into bubble text) how would you do that? Pose Morph? Or are the vertex maps animatible to that degree?

    Thanks for another great tut.
Reverse the vertex Map – found this

  • Hey Folks!
    Very informative. I learned alot!
Although i think u dont get around subsurface scattering here. Compared to the reference the GSG result has a rather plastic look, wich also comes from the perfectly sharp top reflection layer. I think u dont need that at all or at least could blur it just a bit too.
Anyway i always love to see new stuff from you guys.
Btw. do you plan to switch to gpu rendering in the future? Its so much faster and looks so much better. I couldnt live without it anymore 😀

  • As always awesome stuff guys, although before I viewed the tutorial, I thought the image spelled out CHERS. Thank God the new R17 has that spline smooth pen tool…lol

    Dear,
firstly, thank u for your free tutorials, it is really useful, I have a question about how to combine two texture like this photo, I mean color with export image like noise pattern.

  • Another excellent tutorial from the C&N cooperation!
I had no idea vertex maps could make such an impact, not just in object mode, but in a material. Lots of exceptional sweet tips in this one, and yep did I learn new things yep I did.

  • Another cool tutorial man. Nice guys!

  • Chris, you mention that you will be talking about softbody dynamics at NAB. Do you have a link to a video of this talk ?
