Global Illumination Animation Preset: Adjusting Settings and Managing Grain

March 22, 2012

In this quick video, I wanted to show you some of the settings for the Animation Preset that is part of the HDRI Studio Pack. I go over how to clean up grain in your renders, if you really need to, and also how to adjust the animation settings to give you the best looking renders in the least amount of time.

Nick always worried with his followers…GREAT STUFF

  • very nice

  • Hey Nick,
can you show me how i can animate the words HDRI, like your last video?

    Great Job,

    greetings from germany ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • love hdri animation the balls are amazing….. plssssssssssssssssssssss plsssssssssssssss make a fulll tutorial of ths video pllllsssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss plsssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss plsssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss

    • i think we don’t need a tutorial with balls animation it’s prety much the same cherry 7up tutorial
with an floor and i think with more clones and more splines it’s simple and easy to do i’ll try to do and upload it later

  • Very cool. Didn’t expect to see no grain in the animation with your default setting. So now it looks for me like a good balance between speed and qualitiy. Also thanx for the explanation how to tweak the grain.

    Great product Nick ๐Ÿ™‚

  • I haven’t actually tried this yet, but I suspect that you could run your grainy rendered file through Red Giant’s Magic Bullet Denoiser II to help clean it up a bit.

    • That was exactly what I was thinking. Since Bullet Denoiser 2 is much more stable it is really worth a try…

    • Boys I tried this – no way. RB Denoiser Plugin doesn’t “recognize” this kind of noice and won’t work. But maybe there are other tools which work? Maybe Neatvideo?

  • how many cores do you have man? i count 25!!!

  • isnยดt that imposible?

  • Dear Nick,firstly thank you very much for the tutorial,very useful but I have a problem,I hope you can help me,I try to fix but I can’t fix…here is;
Last night,I create a ”Turkish Raki Bottle” but when I try to render with your HDRI Studio Pack
I see background in render because my bottle is transparency (glass). I don’t want to see background in render,

    here is sample render image:

    here is project file link:

so I need your help Dear Nick, please help me fix this problem,
I think to buy HDRI Studio Pack but I want to try firstly
and I was used my friends computer for this render,
This is very nice experience for me about ”test drive for HDRI Studio Pack”
Thank you very much Nick, bye ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Go to the compositing tag inside the hdri studio pack and disable “seen by refraction” – you can also search the C4d help on this topic – the manual is very good…

  • A very quickie render i just did if someone,if anyone wants the files of the project only ask that I send them with improvements

  • That’s a great tut, i really have problems with animations time rendering and flickering with GI. Almost 48 hours for this video I’ll will try this preset and i hope it will help ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Excellent noodle of info. I’m sure I could somehow find out, but what is your current system spec? You are rendering 3x faster than me, and I want that speed! =)

  • Anyone else just seeing blank images where the videos should be? I’m using Firefox on a MAC OS X 10.6.8. Thanks.

  • Hi Nick,

I am going to ask my boss to buy this. Awesome !! I think everyone knows you are kind of God of C4D texturing and lighting. Would it be possible for you or Chris to give us some cool tutorial about Sketch and Toon?

  • Nick,

Would you mind sharing your complete computer setup. Which machine, memory, Hard Drive, Cores….

From the looks of it when you render it looks like you have between 24 and 32 cores on that machine.

I would also like to know how you have it set up as far as “virtual cores”, this is something I’ve read about where it doubles your amount of cores or processors. I’ve not been able to take advantage of it myself and it is a little frustrating to watch other machines burn through renders so quickly.

  • You can loop in the new Quicktime by pressing Cmd Opt L or going to view > loop.

  • Neat video helps a lot to denoise your renders. Here a quick mini tut if you own the software (you need AE as well, or other host software wich supports neat video)
STEP 1: For your animation, render out using the physical renderer (to avoid aliasing crap etc) with QMC GI (to avoid flickering) and low sample settings (To avoid growing a beard when waiting for your render)
STEP 2: Render out the same animation, but now just a couple of frames and with a plane that catches shadows. Should be clearly visible and not blocked by other objects. The meaning of this plane is that it gives Neat video a good sample of the noise you have in your scene.
STEP 3: Import scenes in After effects (or other NV supported host software.).
STEP 4: Apply NV on the Scene with the plane, sample the noise and save pattern.
STEP 5: Apply NV on your “real” scene, and load the sampled noise pattern. Then denoise with NV.
This should reduce your grain A LOT.

  • super helpful! thanks

  • hey gorrila any chance to give us the project file ..i dont want to sound greedy that was very helpfull but i would like to see how u made that animation … thank u

  • you are a beast man but i just want u to a full tut for the hdri animation cause i want to make like like a surprise for my girlfriend plzzzzzzzz nick

  • Guys, what c4d anti-aliasing filters do u recommend for anims; Cubic(still image) or Gauss (animation)?

  • no forth coming tutorial on this, i don’t guess, eh?

I have a question about gamma. I have watched some videos from Nick about HDRI & working with GI in Cinema 4D, and in those videos he said to keep the gamma on 1.8 (for old macs) or 2.2 (for pcs and actual macs) according to the monitor’s gamma. But in this animation preset, it is set to 1. Why? Should I always jump into the gamma and set it to 2.2 by default or should I set it to my taste or what fits my project better (visually)?

  • Is there a link or name for the effect, that the cubes are going through in the tutorial?

  • Great Job Nick, The HDRI animation is pretty amazing. I enjoyed watching it over and over with its dynamics. I so much appreciate your works and I learn so much from this blog every week. I look forward to shaking your hands someday to personally say Thank you for your selfless contribution to the entire C4D community. KUDOS

  • I tried Using R13 for the cherry 7up tutorial to see if I could come up with the HDRI tutorial but I’m having difficulty from the Dynamics tag as I couldn’t go further from there as R13 does not have the rigid tag on the Mograph tag. Any Help? Thanks

  • dear nick,
your work ist great, thanks soooo much for the tutorials, itยดs a pleasure to follow them ๐Ÿ™‚

iยดm amazed by the HDRI animation and i know, that there ist the cherry tutorial which shows how to use the spline effector. but still i have a question:
is there a way to effect the mograph objects in a way, so that they fill a certain volume, not just a spline?
when using the cloner object, there is the option to distribute the objects inside of a volume, but i couldnยดt find a way to achieve the same using a deformer ….
do you or anybody who is reading this have a tip for me?

    thanks to you nick
    and the community,

    HDRI pack GI ani prensent

    what’s problem? Help pls

  • Hey Nick! I was wondering how I can ADD more grain to a still render, without your lightkit, just default GI. I have one scene in particular, where the reflections are much too smooth. Adding that to my lack of lighting/texturing skill, and you have a far from perfect render. If I add grain, I think it’ll be much better, thanks!

  • se it starts to be realy common problem, and i read about it many topics but… I want to get solution specially for this scene, thats why i start this topic.
If you render included scene you see the flickering effect on the bevels.
So anyone please tell me how to solve this problem. Thanks.

  • how to remove flicker render in cinema 4d ?

  • Hey Nick!
Thanks for your tutorials I fell in love with 3D animation. I just have one recurring problem : my global illumination settings in the render settings window look different than yours. I have C4D R14 Studio version and I have the HDRI Studio Pack as well, however in this tutorial and in the Dynamic Metaball Title Sequence tutorial I got totally confused when it came to global illumination, as the settings that you used were not there in my program ( eg: no Sky window at all) I’m a beginner, so the solution might be obvious, I just can’t figure it out and hope that you ( or anyone reading this comment) can help me with that. Thank you in advance! Dora

  • Hi there…Is there any tutorial how to animate those cubes in the “Animation Preset Examples” video ?
..or somethin similar, cause animating one at the time is a killer ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • Great explanation Nick, any review of this for R16 update presets? I notice the sky sampler is no longer used in the preset. Ways to reduce grain under R16?

  • Thanks Nick, any review of this for R18 update presets? the sky sampler is no longer used in the preset. Ways to reduce grain under R18?
