How to Bend or Deform Extruded Shapes in Cinema 4D

February 25, 2016

bendingIn this tutorial, I’m going to show you how to bend or deform extruded shapes in Cinema 4D. If you ever tried to deform an extruded spline before you’ll experience some odd issues with the geometry not deforming as you’d like it to. In this video we’ll talk about why that is and how to change your splines intermediate points and Extrude Object’s Cap options to be able to achieve a nice smooth deformation of your extruded object. Then we’ll go over how to use deformers like the Bend and Wrap deformers to create some interesting abstract art…that kiiiiinda looks like the C4D logo all remixed. As always, experimenting with this technique is encouraged to see what sort of interesting compositions you can come up with!

If you have any questions, be sure to post it in the comments section and if you create anything cool using this technique, be sure to share it with me! Thanks for watching!

  • you may put a deformer as a child of extrude object but you have to put it at the last position in the extrude hierarchy. I usually prefered to do like you (group them in a null object) but that way makes the “fit to parent” option to work.

  • It seems to me SuperText from GSG would help with it perfectly. Woundn’t it ?

  • check out this NAB 2015 presentation by Brett Morris for more developed (animated) take on the subject of ‘Blobby Orb’:

  • Great tutorial – thanks so much!

  • Try setting intermediate points to natural and lowering the number of points. This will make it smoother.

  • I am trying to bring in a shape from illustrator and give it a balloon like look and feel. However nothing works. Can you help or point me in tut direction?

  • Just did a quick random design from this idea. Tell me what you think?:P

  • I wanna see the material setting

  • i feel like maybe creating the geometry in another 3D program will be easier than having to sort out the pinching in C4D

  • You saved my career!!:) Thanx a lot fo this method!
