How To Use Dynamics, Particle Emitters, and Different Camera Angles in Cinema 4D Part 2

In part 2 of this tutorial we head in to After Effects to composite all the separate camera angles we rendered from Cinema 4D. We use pre-comps to set up the scenes and edit them together in another comp. Then, we do a final color correct and add motion blur to finish up the animation.

  • Thanks for the tutorials as always, I appreciate it and also pick up a trick or two… fyi,( alt [ and alt ] )are great for trimming layers to edit in AE… also, instead of ( shift command / ) try ( command M ) to render comps

  • This is great Nick and very useful,

    But one thing I would like to comment on is that the original had eyeball colour variations, How would this be achieved in Cinema 4D as I’ve tried using the colour shader effector to no avail.

  • hey nick. i think you could have used abit of DOF here, which brings alot of credibility into the original spot. i also would recommend to use as less curves and cc layers a possible as it cranks up bending and infoloss. one way to do so would be a precomp with the CC layers which you then can drag into any comp and turn on continuous rasterisation. so for overall colour adjustments you just have to jump back into the cc precomp. peace!!

  • all the time i was wondering how did you do fade out at the end, and at the end you tell me that you will explain this in future πŸ™‚ fade-out is all AE made? punching blacks first and then overall exposure down? btw. great tut!

    • there are several ways to do it, one is make use of the object buffer for the “5”, then in AE use luma matte to isolate the “5” and fade it out or whatever you want to do with it

  • Hey Nick, you can use the Stage object from the Objects/Scene menu to switch cameras in the same scene. Once you’ve added a Stage object, click on the attributes manger and drag you camera to the camera field and add a keyframe.

    • Yep I too was gonna mention the
      Stage Object… even made a little test render to show how it comes out.

      This was 1 project file and 1 movie file rendered, with multipass and I object buffers.

      It ends up being 1 file (which can limit your flexibility) but you can import the cameras in an AEC file. if you want to play with bkgs and particles or add external compositing tags for later AE use.

      • I’m sure Nick is getting tired of hearing the Stage tag. Although it is pretty convenient, the problem I have is that you can’t go back n forth on the time line. Which means you can’t overlap. Unless there’s something I’m missing. (Probably) Nick was onto it in the first tutorial and someone confirmed it in the comments. Making different Render Settings presets for each camera allows you to Render all angles from just one file. Every camera angel gets it’s own Render setting preset. Then add them to the render que. Thanks again Nick for all you do.

        • I dont understand what you mean by this.. if your talking overlap on the cameras you can just adjust when you “take” the next camera. and render out those new frames (assuming you use a sequence rather than a single video file.) you can always just go back a render out the frames you need, either way works. At least with one sequence render you don’t have to wait for multiple camera files to render nor do you have to line them up later they’ll be in order already. In the end it doesn’t really matter just what you prefer in your workflow.

  • Hey Nick, great in depth tutorial there, it’s the little things that I really like to pick up on like ‘ooh, that’s what Fracture is for’ or a shortcut I have never used.

    In the original there is a bit of depth to the iris (you were right about the iris by the way, believe in yourself more!) – how could that have been achieved… bump map??

  • on the original video, the eyeballs move when they emit. how would that be achieved?

    • There are a number of ways to do this. You can create an animated texture (video) and load it into the material. However the easiest way is by animating the UV position of the projected texture.Both options should work fine for this project.

    Big question here. How do you handle learning and practicing your skills while not spending all your free time on the computer. My girlfreind has begun to hate ‘that silly 3d game’ with a vengence! But if I don’t learn, I don’t improve and if I dont improve then to me, all it will ever be is just a silly little 3d game passtime.

  • Cool Beans. How about making them blink randomly or possibly all at once near the end?

    That would bring about a level of creepiness often associated with disembodied eyeballs.

  • Just a quick note. The colours are a bit more intense than I liked as I had to compress before uploading to save time. The original is more muted πŸ™‚ Also wish I had done a bit of dof but considering I only did it today and I am fairly a newb i don’t think its too bad πŸ™‚

  • Hey Nick, thanks for all your tutorials.
    (Sorry for my english, I’m brazilian)
    I’m writing because I use an different way to change between these camera angles.
    I use one single camera, set up the keyframes, go to the timeline in the F-curve mode, select them all and change the mode from “spline” to “step” (or alt+T).
    This way, I can render all the angles at once, without having to create one camera for each angle, or even one scene file for each.
    Anyway, I hope that I could help.
    I’ve learned a lot with you, man, thank you so much!
    And I have also bought the Light Kit Pro with the HDRI kit, and it’s awesome. Congratulations for that.

    I am creating one like this and following your tutorials, all are going smooth but my only problem is the balls when starting to compressed each other they are like jelly intersecting to each other, and I have more balls falling out, not sticking to the “5”.

  • quick question… nick do you have any idea how one would do this particle dynamics in order to create liquid? by parenting the a metaball to emitter, i tried making the metaball act the same way as the spheres in the stetic mesh… Please advice.

    I have strange issue. For some reason not all of my spheres are rendering when I try to render out the full animation. The particular thing is, when I do a quick single frame render in the viewport, all the spheres are visible as you’d expect but whenever I send it to the render queue or the picture viewer I’m randomly missing chunks of spheres in parts of the text I’m forming.

    Any suggestions?

  • Hello, I saw your tutorial and, in the render queue that you use, it is not necessary to save the file multiple times. You just have to create new settings in the render settings window, and put the same file multiple times in the render queue and selecting the setting you want to render. Thanks for the tutorial, it was great.
