Today Chris unravels the complicated world of UVs. There is a lot to know about working with UVs. But today Chris will try and explain enough for the average user to start working with it and model a piggy bank.

Yup, skinning a model has always been a pain in the ass, and I think you demonstrated that very well in this tutorial, haha.
In the past I’ve used a tool called Headus that dynamically unwraps a model’s UV’s in an interactive way. Its pretty spectacular. May want to look into that program (if you’re not familiar with it already).
These days though, I’m more interested in painting directly onto the model, and Photoshop supports this these days by exporting an .obj file and importing into the 3D portion of Photoshop. But its a little convoluted. If you get into that, could you maybe elaborate on that process in another tutorial? It just seems like painting directly on the model is so much easier because you know where you’re putting your textures visually, and then can see how the textures are being applied in the UV’s.

Brilliant… I had never thought of using the 3D paint mode in Photoshop for this.
So simple and easy to do, you get much more of a feel for what your actually painting than when you paint on to a UV map.
Just tried it out and it works perfectly, much easier than trying to create UV maps.

finally a good UV unwrap tutorial!
When I’m watching Chris’ videos I find I end up being more in awe and distracted by his knowledge than trying to keep up with what I should be learning. How can a human being know so many keyboard shortcuts, what they do and how to make them do what you want them to do so quickly and intuitively? It’s way beyond any level I’m at right now but I love watching none the less.

The big problem that you got in the pig is because you don’t cut the edges in the correct way, because you have to start at the face, then cut along the important polygons, as you can see you never cut away the ears of the pig, i can’t explain how to cut the edges just writing in this comment area, but if u have some questions about correct UV mapping for Body Paint, you can send me an email, and sometimes i prefer to use external software like Zbrush to do that, its more easiest, but if you want to use body paint and photoshop i can resolve some of your big problems, because you have a lot of problems with the relax UV, and about LSCM is the Least Square Conformal Map, here is an external Information about the basics of LSCM mathematical function Click Here For the Eyes of the pig the best way is make the relax UV separated.

THANK YOU, so much. I knew UV mapping in Maya and Max but never could understand it in C4D or any tutorials on it. I actually love Max’s UV mapping. So thank you so much on doing this tutorial and doing your best to equating it to pelt mapping. Very helpful.
This was a very interesting and helpful tutorial, I would ask though.. How would you go about moving this into Photoshop to make a texture specific for the model? Really just how do people create those 3D items such as in games and MMO’s (Weapons, Hats, etc)
Great tutorial Chris, thank you. If anyone is interested in painting directly onto the model in Bodypaint try the “Projection Painting” tool from within the BP Paint Layout mode rather than the BP UV Edit (See the help files) It enables you to rotate the viewport around the model then paint the model some more, its also a good way to deal with seams that arise when painting on unwrapped UV’s. There’s a very good set of Bodypaint tutorials available from c4dcafe.com, they require payment around 99 New Zealand Dollars, but go into detail about solving problems when unwrapping UVs. Hope this helps a little.
Also, I think the problems Chris had with the money hole not unwrapping properly and having to manually move the UV points may have been fixed by selecting those UV polygons (the money hole only), then selecting the “Projection Tab” again and setting the projection type to flat or frontal, then going back to the “Relax UV” tab and clicking apply in LSCM mode again to flatten out those UV polygons individually.

Another great tutorial Chris. What I really love is watching you solving problems on the fly, you learn a lot from watching the thought process. And thanks for showing the UV Magnet tool – I can’t believe I’ve not found that before!
Great tutorial Chris.
This is very similar to UV mapping in 3dsMax, after getting to the bit where you open up the BP view settings, I kind of got the idea. for about 5 minutes you were trying to figure out why the Pelt mapping was being funny. that matrix extrude for the tail adds alot of one sided weight to the pig – I’d slice the tail off completely and texture it completely separately to the rest of the pig as well as the ears. LCM pelt mapping only works well with symmetrical shapes, if you are adding asymmetrical details to a model, then you really need to tx them separately. I’ll get round to doing my own tutorial on this at some point.
Pretty much all programs are going to be similar at this point. The next thing he needs to go over is hard surface and the interactive mapping feature. I personally would pay $100 to get a roadkill plugin for C4D. Maybe even $200 just to speed things up…
But then again Roadkill is free and I will just use for Maya for the time being. But that auto map selection is excellent and I think you would get more users by improving this workflow.

Hi! nice tut! one tipp, you can use path selection instead of selecting edges with the live selection tool. saves you enormous amount of time and pain! 🙂

Does anyone know that the major benefits are of unwrapping vs. painting directly onto the model? Since smart people always seem to prefer unwrapping I was wondering what the drawbacks were from taking the easy route. Thanks!

Awesome and informative. I UV’d a model about 3 years ago, with version 10.5, so it’s good to see it done with version 13. UV mapping is definitely fun in a masochistic kind of way. It was good to see what some of the other obscure looking buttons do and adds to the tool kit of things to try.
I did enjoy the modelling part.

Great In depth tut on uv unwrapping. One of the few out on the internet right now and it was a stunner!
Honestly, blender’s UV unwrap is way better and easier to use than C4D and it’s free. I use cinema 4D 95% of the time, but when it comes to UV mapping and smoke I switch to blender. They make good companions.
And how do you go back to Cinema again?

Would love to see the painting, then baking textures and exporting to collada – esp for us newbs who do platform stuff but new in to Cinema 4D 🙂

Ok…i got a prob…i tried using bodypaint to add materials for once thinking i may like it…which i dont…starting painting…didnt like how it was turning out…so figured id go back to normal cinema 4d and add normal materials.
Now that im back in normal mode…i can no longer add material to a selection. When i make a selection to add a material to…it now adds it to the whole object and i have no clue how to get it back to normal.
Any help would be appreciated…
I ended up getting it…it was in a hierarchy…so i selected all in that group…made everything editable…then combined and deleted…and that did the trick…

Hello. I’d need some help. I am trying to follow the tutorial but when I do what the guy is showing in the tutorial 38:30 I am failing. Try to use the buffer and go to 38:30 timeline and see what I mean. At one point he has got the snail overlapping the body in the UV map. He uses some sort of shortcut for sure cause he select one poligon of the snail and then he extends the selections to all the other poligons of the snail only.Could any of you help me to understand what is going on?

I find that that this tutorial could be an excellent step towards normal mapping with Cinema 4d. Whatever I try I can’t seem to map the hires Pig to the Lowres pig. (Inside Cinema or using Xnormal) – Could you give it a crack? (that and the coloring tut – off-course. 🙂

I was having difficulties in the unwrap with another model, it is time consuming inside C4d….and this is a simple pig.

Thanks so much Chris. This tutorial helped me finally crack into the UV editing club, something no other tutorial has been able to do. For years I’ve been setting texture projection to cubic and hoping for the best with some fiddling, rather than face editing the UV. No longer!
This is great. 4 years later, and still more informative than anything Maxon supplies, which is kind of depressing.
A great introduction to UV editing that actually improved my practical understanding of it by about 1000%.
